The Sandman Creator Neil Gaiman Accused of Sexual Abuse by Additional Women

The Sandman Creator Neil Gaiman Accused of Sexual Abuse by Additional Women

As a lifelong fan of Neil Gaiman’s captivating stories and vivid imagination, it’s heart-wrenching to hear these distressing accounts of his alleged actions towards several women over the years. The man who brought us tales of good versus evil, love, loss, and magic, now stands accused of something far darker and more sinister.

Neil Gaiman, renowned for his works such as “The Sandman” comics and productions like “Coraline” and “Good Omens,” is currently dealing with a lengthening list of sexual abuse accusations. In a fresh installment of Tortoise Media’s Master: the allegations against Neil Gaiman, two more women have stepped forward with claims. One of these new allegations traces back to 1986, when Gaiman was just 25, further stretching the troubling timeframe over several decades. These two women join three others who publicly spoke out against “The Sandman” series co-creator in July.

Back in the years 2014 to 2021, I was a tenant of Neil Gaiman’s property in Woodstock, New York. This woman named Caroline Wallner claims that, following my divorce, things took an uncomfortable turn. She alleges that I pressured her into a sexual relationship, promising to let her and her kids stay in the house if she complied (at this point, I was still married to Amanda Palmer). According to Wallner, I threatened to evict her if she didn’t give in to my advances, and due to financial difficulties, she felt compelled to oblige. Wallner shared that during our intimate moments, I would often say: “‘Call me your master.” This is the account as told by Caroline Wallner.

In a subtle way, there were indications that the house might be crucial, which made me suggest we discuss it further. That’s when he would visit my studio, and in a manner that felt coercive, he’d ask for things… intimately. He could claim it was consensual, but why would I do that? The truth is, I was terrified of losing my creative space.

Eventually, Wallner was required to leave the property following instructions from Neil Gaiman’s business manager, as Gaiman had relocated and Wallner ceased to respond to inappropriate, unwanted photos and video calls sent by Gaiman. Subsequently, Wallner received a settlement amounting to $275,000 and agreed to confidentiality terms.

Julia Hobsbawm, who is one of the recent individuals to accuse Neil Gaiman, alleged an incident in 1986 when she was 22 and Gaiman was 25. She stated that Gaiman made an unwanted, aggressive advance towards her, which led to him forcefully kissing her and pushing her onto a sofa. However, she managed to get away from him. As reported by Rolling Stone, Gaiman persists in denying any wrongdoing. His representatives assert that his relationship with Wallner was consensual. Concerning Hobsbawm, they claim that Gaiman ceased pursuing her once he recognized she wasn’t interested. Gaiman’s team also maintains that the allegations against him are false.

Neil Gaiman’s Earlier Abuse Allegations

Three women have come forward with allegations of abuse by Neil Gaiman, starting from July. Two of these women had previously shared their stories in episodes of “Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman“. One of the most recent accusers is a former nanny hired by Gaiman in 2022. She claims that Gaiman sexually assaulted her within hours of their first meeting, an incident occurring in a bathtub at his New Zealand residence. During a three-week period, she alleges he engaged in penetrative sexual acts. Another woman met Gaiman in 2003 when she was 18, during a book signing in Florida. In her twenties, they began a relationship where she experienced painful intercourse that she did not want or enjoy.

Approximately a month following the podcast appearances of Wallner and Hobsbawm, an individual using the pseudonym Claire featured on an episode of the podcast “Am I Broken: Survivor Stories”. In this episode, she disclosed that Gaiman had manipulated her emotionally and sexually. As per the synopsis, host Papillon DeBoer first spoke to Claire in 2022, at which time she chose not to share her story, but stated that if other survivors came forward, she would do so too. In recent weeks, two women have come forward with stories of abuse involving Neil Gaiman. Moved by their courage and wanting to support all survivors, Claire reached out to DeBoer to tell her story today.

In a chat with DeBoer, Claire disclosed that she crossed paths with Gaiman at a book signing in 2012. Over time, she claimed that he started making uncomfortable sexual advances towards her, such as touching, kissing, and even participating in Skype calls without clothing. Eventually, she stated that Gaiman stopped contacting her when she refused to reciprocate his romantic interests. According to her narrative, after the situation unfolded, she penned a letter to Gaiman detailing her feelings about it. During their subsequent phone call, she mentioned that he admitted ignorance of her emotions and attributed his actions to his autism, suggesting he misunderstood the situation.

Although Gaiman hasn’t faced any legal action yet, it’s important to note that future allegations or legal issues might still arise.
