When Kareena Kapoor Khan was skeptical about romantic scenes with ‘brother-like’ Abhishek Bachchan in Refugee

As an ardent fan of Bollywood, I find myself deeply intrigued by the unique camaraderie shared between Kareena Kapoor Khan and Abhishek Bachchan. Their journey, from the romantic drama “Refugee” to their subsequent film together, “Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon,” is a tale of professional growth and personal dynamics that has captivated many hearts.

Kareena Kapoor Khan and Abhishek Bachchan first appeared together in the romantic drama “Refugee.” This film, directed by J.P. Dutta, was one of the top-earning movies of 2000 and significantly influenced the careers of both actors. Interestingly, it’s less known that Kareena initially hesitated to perform romantic scenes with Abhishek. Keep reading to discover more about their journey!

During an episode of Simi Grewal’s talk show, Kareena received a video message from Abhishek. Mostly, Jr Bachchan praised her, but he also expressed something she would never be able to make amends for. He admitted, “I can never forgive you for botching that scene because I vividly recall the first thing you ever said to me was ‘AB, this is our first romantic scene together. How can I fall in love with you? You’re like my brother.'”

Abhishek Bachchan mentioned an event at the Dargah where Kareena’s character asked him not to leave just as he was about to go. Later, Kareena explained what happened and admitted that she views Abhishek as a sibling. In fact, she confided in director Dutta, “Uncle JP, I can’t perform those scenes if I see him as my brother.”

For a long period, the pair maintained a friendly relationship, but things changed when Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor, Bebo’s sister, ended their years-long romantic involvement.

During an interview with ex-journalist Rajeev Masand, Kareena openly shared, “I’ve consistently stated that Abhishek was the first actor I worked with. He holds a unique and precious spot in my heart that no other actor or person can replace. Whenever I see him, I feel pride, joy, and happiness. It’s regrettable things didn’t work out between us.”

Kareena Kapoor Khan has made it clear that if Abhishek chooses not to work on a movie with her at this time, she will reciprocate by also keeping things as they are. She explained that relationships can change over time and the comfort level between them might not be the same. “I believe everyone should respect that,” Kapoor stated. Apart from Refugee, their only other collaboration was in Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (2003).
