'It Was Like A Wave Of So Much Hate': Actress Reveals What Happened After She Signed On To Play Amber Heard In A Biopic, And It Sounds Gnarly

As a seasoned gamer and avid movie buff who’s seen their fair share of trials, tribulations, and triumphs, I can’t help but empathize with actress Megan Davis for the backlash she faced while portraying Amber Heard in the Depp/Heard trial biopic, “Hot Take.”

Regardless of whether you watched the Depp/Heard trial unfold live on TV or later through the Netflix series “Depp V. Heard”, it was inevitable that a movie adaptation based on the real-life court case would emerge. In fact, Tubi users had an opportunity to reexperience the sensational trial with a free streaming film titled “Hot Take: The Depp/Heard Trial”. This production featured Megan Davis and Mark Hapka portraying the famous ex-pair. Interestingly, Davis mentioned that after she agreed to portray Heard in the biopic, she was hit by a torrent of hate, which is quite intense.

In 2022, the sensational trial of Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard dominated headlines worldwide. The trial centered on a court case that followed Amber Heard’s Washington Post article detailing domestic abuse claims. The verdict was handed down, awarding Johnny Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and an additional $5 million in punitive damages.

Almost two years have passed since the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard court case was turned into a streaming movie, but the actors involved haven’t forgotten their association with the project. Megan Davis, an actress known for roles in shows like “American Horror Story” and “2 Broke Girls”, recently opened up to Page Six about dealing with the backlash from fans who felt she wasn’t suitable for the role: overcoming “a lot of hostility” from viewers.

When the announcement of that role came, it seemed to trigger a torrent of harsh comments and messages, roughly estimated at around 30,000. Many of them were incredibly cruel, with phrases such as ‘You’re so unattractive’, ‘You’re overweight’, ‘You’re a disgrace’. At the time, I believed I was braced for some reaction, but I never imagined it would be this intense and hurtful.

As a gamer putting myself in Megan Davis’ shoes, I must say it feels daunting to face harsh criticism while merely doing my job. I had this inkling that some pushback might come my way when I accepted the role initially. After all, Amber Heard experienced intense scrutiny during her trial, and it serves as a stark reminder of how unpredictable online backlash can be. It’s a tough lesson to learn: no matter how prepared you think you are, there’s always room for unexpected criticism.

Megan Davis hadn’t delved into the Depp V. Heard Trial until after she auditioned for Hot Take. As part of her research on Amber Heard, she aimed to portray her in a more relatable light, or “humanize” her, as best as possible.

As I played back those recordings, I found many similarities between my past arguments with loved ones and what I heard. Navigating love with someone who seems larger than life can be tough. I believe she was doing her best, and I think we all generally strive to do the same. It wasn’t difficult for me to see her as human because I felt that she often showed her humanity, yet it seemed people weren’t acknowledging this aspect of her.

Megan Davis went on to express that although she acknowledged both celebrities involved in the trial weren’t without flaws, she found it exasperating that the public seemed to favor Johnny Depp over Amber Heard to a greater extent. As she delved into courtroom footage and recordings during her preparation for portraying the American actress, Davis developed a deeper understanding and compassion for her character.

Initially, there might have been resistance towards the casting in the movie “Hot Take.” However, according to Megan Davis, once the streaming film debuted, the negative sentiments seemed to dissipate.

At its debut, there was an almost hushed response. This seemed promising; perhaps my performance had been well-received, or perhaps viewers understood the reasoning behind my choice to undertake this project.

Megan Davis, who portrayed Amber Heard, faced a torrent of hostility during that time, which could be described as an overwhelming surge of hatred. Yet, it appears that the LA resident has managed to navigate through this challenging experience by taking on the contentious role and is now thriving. She’s currently involved in various new projects such as her recently published poetry book titled “What Breaks Us” and her self-authored/produced short film titled “Hemorrhage“. You can catch Davis’ performance as Heard in the ongoing streaming of “Hot Take: The Depp/Heard Trial” on Tubi.
