After What Criminal Minds' Showrunner Told Us About Plans For Voit Following That Cliffhanger, Zach Gilford Has A Twisted Idea For A Spinoff

As a dedicated gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds and investigative dramas alike, I can confidently say that the latest season of Criminal Minds: Evolution has been nothing short of thrilling. The high-stakes Season 2 finale was particularly gripping, with the revelation that the elusive fifth point of Gold Star was none other than Pete Bailey, the brother of a slain FBI agent – talk about twists!

The final episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution for 2024 has concluded on TV schedules. In the gripping Season 2 finale, the pursuit of the unsub became deeply personal for Prentiss as she uncovered that the enigmatic fifth member of the Gold Star was none other than Pete Bailey, brother to the late FBI agent Doug Bailey. Thankfully, Prentiss survived and the case was closed without further violence, but Voit’s fate took a grim turn at the season’s end. He was stabbed in prison after being transferred into general population. I reached out to showrunner Erica Messer for insights on Zach Gilford’s character’s future, and it turns out that the actor has a spinoff concept up his sleeve as well.

What The Showrunner Told Us For What’s Next For Voit

Zach Gilford’s character thought that living among regular prisoners wouldn’t put him at risk of being killed because he would be known as Lee Duvall instead of Elias Voit in prison. In fact, he was quite confident about his safety and even enjoyed the sense of power he had over JJ earlier in the season. However, in a shocking turn of events, he was stabbed by other inmates while doing laundry during the last moments of Evolution Season 2. The finale left viewers wondering if Zach’s character survived.

In a dramatic turn of events, Voit succeeded in inflicting harm on his assailant before suffering a stab wound to his abdomen. A blind of bleach to one attacker’s face added to the chaos. However, by the time the closing credits unfurled unexpectedly, Voit was far from well. Speaking about future storylines for Voit, showrunner Erica Messer disclosed to TopMob:

Indeed, I’ve communicated to Zach directly that he’s much like a cat, continually being given new lives on this series. He was initially set to depart at the conclusion of the first season, but his exceptional performance kept us hooked. And now, in the second season, he continues to impress! So, it seems we’ll be seeing more of him next year. I just can’t seem to let go of him.

In Season 2, Voit assumed a role reminiscent of Hannibal Lecter, causing distress among almost every team member at BAU. Rossi was grappling with the aftermath of his captivity by Voit during Season 1’s “Evolution,” while JJ had to perform her duties despite knowing that Gilford’s character played a role in creating the BAUgate website, which contained deepfake images compromising her privacy.

As a dedicated gamer immersed in the thrilling world of this TV show, I’ve found that the antagonist has been relentlessly chipping away at my team due to the serial nature of Evolution. Compared to the more procedural format of the original series on CBS, Evolution keeps me on the edge of my seat with its unfolding storylines.

No way! Exactly, and that’s one of the reasons we felt confident in telling that story, in terms of we could let a bad guy get away for ten episodes, but we couldn’t let him get away for 22 like in the network version. So that’s why we thought, ‘Oh, we’ll catch him at the end of the first ten, and then that’ll be that we’ll go on to another bad guy.’ But he just was the gift that kept on giving. He planted so many little evil seeds around, including Gold Star. So we had to follow up. We’ll see him next season.

The TV series “Criminal Minds: Evolution” had its third season confirmed as early as June, even on the day before the Season 2 premiere. This meant viewers could enjoy the finale without fretting over the Voit cliffhanger going unresolved. However, during filming, there was uncertainty about the show’s continuation given this significant, unsolved plot twist. I got a chance to ask the showrunner herself about her level of assurance that the series wouldn’t be axed amidst such an enormous plot thread left hanging, and she responded:

As a gamer, let me tell you, I was genuinely optimistic this time around. Usually, I’m not one to hold my breath in this industry, but for once, I found myself filled with hope. I had faith that our story on Paramount+ was far from over and they would continue to be invested in it. Even the dramatic cliffhanger ending we planned seemed like a smart move, despite the renewal happening after we’d made that decision. So, optimistic rather than certain, is how I’d describe my feelings.

Although fans are delighted with the certainty of Season 3 and the confirmation that Zach Gilford will reprise his role, it doesn’t necessarily imply he’ll be back in prison or causing trouble for the BAU as he did in the recent season. Rossi’s character arc in Season 2 shows that Gilford can appear in a scene without the actual Voit being present.

That of course doesn’t determine that Voit died and we’ll just see him via Rossi’s hallucinations moving forward, but there are certainly more questions than answers. And that brings us to the actor’s idea for a spinoff centered on his character!

Zach Gilford’s Spinoff Idea

As it’s been confirmed that Voit will reappear in some capacity for Season 3 of Evolution (which marks Season 18 of Criminal Minds), fans are now playing a game of patience to discover Erica Messer’s plans for his character. Meanwhile, Zach Gilford, who stars in the show accessible with a Paramount+ subscription, has expressed an idea for a spin-off series similar to Criminal Minds in conversation with Us Weekly.

As a longtime fan of Criminal Minds, I can’t help but feel that there’s still more to explore when it comes to one of the show’s most intriguing characters: Matt Simmons (Voit). Throughout the years, his complex and often morally ambiguous actions have left me hooked, always wondering what could have been if he had chosen a different path. I believe that giving Voit his own spinoff would be a fantastic opportunity to delve deeper into his backstory, explore his motivations, and provide closure for both the character and the audience.

It’s clear that Voit exhibited sneaky, unsavory behavior during his initial two seasons, and I find it plausible that he has ties to secure himself some resources if he manages to break out of prison. However, one might wonder what his activities would be! Continuing on, Gilford stated:

In the new series, Voit seems to be taking various actions, possibly attempting to reconcile with his family, an outcome I’m doubtful of. He keeps tabs on the BAU’s activities, as both shows share continuity, allowing for potential crossovers or keeping them separate entirely.

As a long-time fan of the gripping series we’ve been following, I’m eagerly anticipating any new content that delves deeper into the enigmatic character of Voit. Having spent two seasons watching Gilford portray this complex killer, I can confidently say that his performance has captivated me. His unexpected take on Voit’s crimes earlier this year left me intrigued and craving more insight into the mind of this fascinating character.

I’m eagerly anticipating the announcement about when Season 3 of my favorite show, Evolution, will premiere on Paramount+. Although we don’t have a specific date yet, I’m confident that the suspenseful cliffhanger in the second season with Voit won’t leave us hanging forever.
