Halsey Recalls Experiencing a Miscarriage During a Performance: “I Was Sick All Night”

As a gamer with a heart for artists, I can’t help but admire Halsey‘s strength and resilience. Their journey, marked by struggles with health issues, miscarriages, and abortions, is a testament to their unwavering spirit.

I have always admired Halsey for their bravery and transparency. As someone who has also experienced a miscarriage, I can relate to the pain and emotional turmoil that comes with it. It takes great strength to share such personal experiences, especially when doing so in the public eye. Kudos to Halsey for using their platform to bring attention to this sensitive topic and providing comfort to others who may be going through a similar situation.

In an episode of the “SHE MD Podcast” hosted by Mary Alice Haney and Dr. Thais Aliabadi, Halsey (now 29) shared that they experienced a miscarriage at the age of 20, shortly before a performance.

“The artist, who identifies with both ‘they’ and ‘she’ pronouns, shared with the interviewers that they found themselves in a challenging situation. This was early on in their career, and the success of the show was significant. Not only did it involve corporate and media partners, but there were also a thousand eager children who had been waiting all day to attend and watch the performance.”

Instead, they chose to wear an adult incontinence product and resumed their performance for approximately 45 minutes. Following their act, they exited the stage, retched in the parking area, and subsequently sought refuge at a nearby hotel.

“Last night, I was really ill,” the singer of ‘Without Me’ commented. “I recall finding myself in the bathtub, feeling lost and unsure due to excessive bleeding. I apologize for being so detailed.” The following morning, they rose early to catch a flight bound for Canada.

Besides the toughness of the miscarriage itself, Halsey confessed that they grappled with a multitude of intricate emotions due to their advanced age during the incident.

“At the age of 20, I found myself contemplating, ‘Surely at this age, I ought to be capable of carrying a child.’ Yet, I wasn’t eager to be pregnant, deeply engrossed in my career as I was. This decision stirred a whirlwind of emotions within me – relief, confusion, guilt, sorrow, and an overpowering curiosity. ‘Is there something amiss with me?’ I wondered, grappling with the fact that this is the age when conception should be possible for me. What’s going on?”

In a 2022 article with Vogue, Halsey revealed that they suffered three miscarriages before their 24th birthday. The musician had welcomed a child the year before and chose to share this experience as a response to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe. v. Wade. They explained that they underwent an abortion during one of these miscarriages, which ultimately helped save their life and allowed them to have their son. “My abortion played a crucial role in my survival and paved the way for my child to be born,” Halsey wrote.

Throughout their career, this artist has not only showcased their talent but also openly discussed their health challenges, including endometriosis, lupus, a T-cell disorder, and struggles with infertility.

“On the podcast, they expressed a strong desire for more children, as their previous experience of pregnancy with their son was incredibly rewarding. However, they felt guilty about living most of his life sick, which accounted for about two-thirds to three-quarters of it. This guilt made them feel terrible about themselves, but they realized that this unnecessary guilt was only worsening their condition. So, they told themselves that they were mourning the fact that they couldn’t be the ideal mother due to their illness, as they always aspired to be the best mother possible.”
