Hema Malini reacts to Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from Paris Olympics 2024: '100 grams matter a lot, lesson for all women and artistes'

As a lifestyle expert with a rich background in athletics and fitness, I find Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Olympics a deeply saddening and disappointing event. Having spent years training my body to perfection, I understand the sheer determination and dedication it takes to reach such high levels of competition.

In an unexpected turn of events, wrestler Vinesh Phogat, poised to make history as India’s first female wrestler to reach the Olympics final after defeating Yui Susaki on Tuesday night, was disqualified due to excess weight before her final match against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt on Wednesday (August 7, 2024). In response, BJP leader and actress Hema Malini commented that this incident serves as a reminder for all women and artists.

In a video posted by PTI, Malini was questioned about Vinesh’s exclusion from the Olympics 2024 and she expressed, “It’s quite shocking, and it seems unfair that disqualification occurred over just 100 grams. It’s essential for everyone, artists, women, and all to understand how significant 100 grams can be. We all sympathize with her situation, we hope she manages to shed those 100 grams soon, but it seems unlikely at the moment.”

As a devoted supporter, I find it unsettling to witness her disqualification due to surpassing the weight limit by 100 grams. It’s crucial for us all, particularly women and artists, to maintain our weights diligently, as even small differences like 100 grams can make a significant impact. I cannot help but feel empathy for her in this challenging situation. I sincerely hope she manages to shed those extra 100 grams swiftly, but unfortunately, this setback may deprive her of another opportunity.

In the 50-kilogram freestyle wrestling competition at the Paris Olympics, Vinesh Phogat, who usually competes in the 53 kg category, was found to be slightly overweight by 100 grams. Despite her efforts to meet the lower weight limit for the games, she surpassed it on the day of weigh-ins. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has contested her disqualification due to this minor oversight.

It’s said that Phogat found out last night that she was a kilogram overweight for the competition. To drop the extra weight, she cycled and exercised intensely all night long, shedding approximately 900 grams according to reports. Determined to make the required weight, she stayed awake the entire night adjusting her weight before the competition.

Following her exceeding the set limit, Indian authorities pleaded for more time from the Olympic committee; however, the committee showed little room for discussion, according to sources.

In a show of support, Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged Vinesh Phogat’s resilience despite his apparent disappointment. He urged the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha to submit a robust plea and suggested looking into every available option for rectification.

Phogat became the first Indian woman to make it to the Olympic wrestling finals, an achievement that made history. However, her unexpected disqualification, which happened right before she could clinch a gold or silver medal, has left the nation in shock.

Even though Phogat was guaranteed a silver medal, her disqualification signifies that she won’t earn any medal at the Paris Games.

In her debut at the Paris Games, Phogat encountered a tough match against four-time world Olympic champion and unbeaten Japanese wrestler Yui Susaki. Despite this formidable opponent, she still left an indelible mark on the competition.
