Instead of accessing the old site, visitors will now be directed to the Max streaming service website. On this new platform, they’ll be invited to sign up for a membership in order to access the beloved content that was previously available on Cartoon Network’s website. Upon visiting the site currently, viewers will encounter a message on the homepage explaining the reason behind this change.
Warner Bros. Discovery Is Trying to Make Up for Losses
It’s quite evident what the motive is behind this action: Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) aims to reduce expenses and boost subscriptions for their service, Max. This strategy mirrors their recent choice regarding Boomerang, a cartoon streaming service that will cease operations by September’s end. However, they are urging customers to migrate to Max, subscribe, and carry on enjoying Boomerang’s content. Previously, the Cartoon Network website provided full episodes and clips of their shows freely, but now, fans will only be able to access them through a subscription to Max. The website also provided free content and games, which will no longer be accessible to users following this change.
After reporting a decrease in revenue and a large net loss during Q2, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) seems to be taking steps to boost its subscription numbers. The company’s financial struggles are believed to stem from a significant devaluation of its cable networks, such as CNN, TNT, TBS, Cartoon Network/Adult Swim, and others, amounting to $9.1 billion. Domestically, the number of subscribers to their streaming services has dropped by 300,000, leaving them with approximately 52.4 million subscribers. However, internationally, they have seen an increase of 3.9 million subscribers, totaling 50.8 million. In a bid to attract more customers, WBD has recently closed its Cartoon Network website, which could be part of a larger strategy to encourage subscription to their services.
