Colin Farrell Opens Up About Son With Angelman Syndrome: “I Want the World to Treat Him With Kindness”

For the very first time, Colin Farrell has chosen to share openly about his child who has Angelman syndrome and also announced the establishment of a foundation aimed at assisting individuals with intellectual disabilities.

In a recent chat with People magazine, the actor nominated for an Oscar opened up about his son James, who is diagnosed with a rare neurogenetic disorder at the age of two and a half. Now, he’s using this platform to bring attention to James’ condition and the issue that many support systems for families with special needs children will no longer be available after their 21st birthday.

At age 21, your child transitions to being largely independent, as Farrell clarified. This means that any protective measures such as special education classes will no longer apply, leaving you with a young adult who ideally should be fully integrated into today’s society. Unfortunately, more times than not, these individuals are overlooked and left behind instead.

Robert Pattinson, the actor portraying Batman, mentioned that he’s speaking openly about this matter solely because he can no longer inquire privately from James, as his son is unable to communicate verbally.

“He mentioned that he converses with James as if he’s a mature adult with excellent English skills and typical cognitive abilities. However, he can’t tell if James is comfortable with everything or not. So, he must make a decision based on what he knows about James’ character, the kind of person he is, and the goodness in his heart.”

James’ tireless work throughout his life has made Farrell incredibly proud, and this is just one of the motivations behind the actor establishing the Colin Farrell Foundation. The foundation aims to address a significant need by offering assistance, advocacy, educational resources, and innovative programs for adult children with intellectual disabilities, helping to bridge any existing gaps in support.

“That’s the reason behind our action. It’s all being done for James, as a tribute to him,” he further explained. “My wish is for the world to show kindness towards James. I hope the world treats him with compassion and respect.”
