Zootopia 2 First Look Revealed & Beloved Martial Artist Cast as Villain

As a seasoned cinema devotee who’s seen more animated films than I can count on all my fingers and toes combined, I must say that the news of “Zootopia 2” has sent a wave of excitement coursing through me. The original film was an absolute gem, a masterpiece of storytelling, character development, and social commentary wrapped up in a delightful animated package.

At D23, there were numerous major reveals from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars. The next Disney Animation feature film is set to be Moana 2, however, their next animated movie will actually be a sequel to a blockbuster hit from 2016: Zootopia. The original Zootopia made over $1 billion at the global box office and even won the Academy Award for Best Animated Film. As such, anticipation is running high for the sequel, as it brings back Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wild (voiced by Jason Bateman).

Disney Sequels

In the late ’90s and early 2000s, Disney became known for producing direct-to-video sequels of their animated films. However, it’s worth noting that Walt Disney Animation Studios initially only made one direct sequel, “The Rescuers Down Under.” In the 2010s, they began to focus more on creating follow-ups, starting with a loose continuation of “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” in 2011. This trend has continued, with Disney releasing sequels to some of their most successful films from the 2010s, such as “Ralph Breaks the Internet” in 2018, “Frozen II” in 2019, “Moana 2” this year, followed by “Zootopia 2” in 2025, and then “Frozen 3” in 2027.

Originally, “Zootopia” premiered in March 2016, but Disney has chosen to debut the sequel during the Thanksgiving weekend, typically reserved for their most popular animated films such as “Frozen 2,” “Encanto,” “Wish,” and the upcoming “Moana 2.” Although the sequel is not due out until next year, there’s a possibility that fans might get a sneak peek with the release of “Moana 2” this year. Interestingly, “Zootopia” and “Moana” were Disney’s major releases back in 2016, and now their sequels are being unveiled in a well-timed pairing.

Zootopia 2
opens in theaters on November 26, 2025.
