As a devoted fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of Westeros since its inception, I must say that this revelation about the true ages of our beloved Stark children is nothing short of heart-wrenching. If you recall, Robb Stark and Jon Snow were still sporting their baby faces when they first graced our screens, yet according to George R.R Martin’s books, they were barely out of diapers! Arya, the fearless assassin, was just a precocious nine-year-old when she witnessed her father’s brutal beheading. And let us not forget Bran Stark, who was only seven in the book and ten on the show, already struggling with his own destiny as the Three-Eyed Raven.
In 2011, when “Game of Thrones” debuted its first episode, those viewers unacquainted with distinguishing a Stark from a Stannis were oblivious to the impact that some of the series’ young nobles would have on the realm for the next eight years. Remarkably, it might also surprise you to learn that these characters are much younger in the books than they appear on screen. A YouTube video by AI enthusiast How Not to AI Art offers a glimpse into what some of the major characters who shaped the Seven Kingdoms’ future truly looked like. Strikingly, for most members of the Stark family tree and other significant figures, they appeared surprisingly young in real life.
In the television show, several characters’ ages differed significantly from their counterparts in the original material. For instance, Ned Stark was approximately 35 years old in the book, but actor Sean Bean was about 52 during filming. It’s also worth noting that if Ned Stark looked like John Wick, he likely would have attacked King’s Landing alone, and no direwolf would have been injured in the process. However, it’s important to remember that even the older Stark children from the books were much younger than their counterparts on the popular fantasy series.
The real age of the Stark children makes their story so much more upsetting
Back in the days when characters like Robb Stark (Richard Madden) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) were barely sporting beards, let alone cloaks on “Game of Thrones”, author George R.R Martin had them and many other young characters in his epic (and as yet unfinished) story much younger still in the books. For instance, Harington was 24 when Season 1 began, while Jon Snow is around 15 years old when he joins the Night’s Watch at the Wall in the original tale. Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), on the other hand, was just nine when she witnessed her father’s execution, making her later roles as a child assassin even more remarkable.
As a devoted fan, I find it striking that among the Stark siblings, the youngest ones seem unusually young in both the book and show. Bran Stark (played by Isaac Hempstead Wright) was 7 years old in the novel and 10 when the series premiered. Similarly, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) started her journey at just 13 years old. This makes her early interactions with Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa) all the more intense. It’s no wonder that these age differences were adjusted for the screen adaptation. However, what truly impressed me is the spot-on casting of Ghost, who perfectly embodies his on-page appearance in the series. Bravo, HBO!
