The main character, Ray Garraty, stands out among the other participants in this “game” due to his origins from Maine, which earns him support from the crowd as a local favorite. To pass the time during their long journey, he becomes acquainted with the other boys, although they all recognize each other as adversaries. However, as more traumatic events occur and pile up, they all start showing signs of mental strain.
