Did you know Ranbir Kapoor was first choice to lead Raanjhanaa? Anand L Rai REVEALS why it couldn't materialize

As a connoisseur of Bollywood films and a dedicated follower of Aanand L Rai’s directorial journey, I must say that Raanjhanaa remains one of my all-time favorites. The film was not just a cinematic masterpiece but an intense emotional rollercoaster that resonated deeply with the audience.

In a different wording: Raanjhanaa wasn’t simply a movie; it embodied a powerful feeling. Directed by Aanand L Rai, the film served as Dhanush’s breakthrough role in Bollywood and won multiple awards. However, you might not know this, but Dhanush wasn’t the original choice for the lead character. In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Rai disclosed that he had initially envisioned Ranbir Kapoor for the part.

“Ever since my own creation, Tanu Weds Manu, became an unforgettable success, I’ve often found myself daydreaming about crafting a sequel. However, filled with self-doubt at times, I and Himanshu (Sharma) instead decided to focus on telling a story as captivating as Raanjhanaa. We realized that the secret behind our success was staying true to our narrative and selecting the perfect cast for the roles.”

Rai stated, “I believe a performer who remains uncomplicated and easily merges with the masses is challenging, and I think that’s Ranbir Kapoor, but he wasn’t accessible at the time. As we were looking for such an actor, we discovered Dhanush instead.” The director went on to emphasize that Dhanush was meant for the success of Raanjhanaa, a role that left everyone astounded by his acting prowess.

The movie “Raanjhanaa” from 2013, besides Dhanush, featured prominent performances by Sonam Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Swara Bhasker, and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub. This film was a significant commercial triumph. AR Rahman, the renowned composer, created the music for this movie, which included popular tracks such as Tum Tak, Piya Milenge, Tu Mun Shudi, Banarasiya, Nazar Laaye, and its chart-topping theme song.

Following Raanjhanaa, Aanand L Rai and Dhanush collaborated again in 2021 for the romantic drama Atrangi Re, featuring Sara Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar. Meanwhile, audiences are eagerly awaiting their next project together, tentatively titled Tere Ishk Mein, with Kriti Sanon potentially joining the cast as well, according to TopMob’s updates.

According to our source, Kriti Sanon was presented with the script for an action-love story by Aanand L Rai a few months ago, and she expressed enthusiasm about being part of it. Beyond the plot itself, the actress reportedly appreciates her character’s development throughout the storyline. The film is expected to start production in October 2024 and aims for a 2025 release.
