Over the weekend, Christine Vachon, the producer involved in Todd Haynes’ recently departed gay-themed film project featuring Joaquin Phoenix, described the current state of affairs as a “nightmare” on her social media platforms.
It became known on Friday that Joaquin Phoenix withdrew from the drama production scheduled to start filming in Guadalajara, Mexico, in five days’ time. The part will not be filled by another actor. The reason for his departure remains uncertain, adding to the puzzle among those involved in the project, as Phoenix had initially brought this project to Haynes.
Over the weekend, Vachon from Killer Films posted an article on Facebook about the issue, stating: “This actually transpired. It’s been a living hell.” (Informal)
Vachon also countered the criticism about Phoenix, who is heterosexual, playing the lead in Haynes’ film about a gay character. “If you feel inclined to scold or caution us with ‘you get what you deserve for casting a straight actor,’ please resist,” she penned. “This was HIS vision that he presented to US – and Killer’s history of collaborating with LGBTQ actors, crew members, and directors is evident.” (And for those who have already done so, understand that you are exacerbating an already difficult situation.)
Vachon has since deleted the post.
Haynes’ upcoming film will center around a passionate gay love story from the 1930s, featuring Danny Ramirez as a co-star. Ramirez is known for his roles in “Top Gun: Maverick” and the upcoming “Captain America: Brave New World.” Alongside Vachon, Pam Koffler was also set to produce this project. According to The Hollywood Reporter’s source, the team was deeply saddened by Phoenix’s departure, and the film’s budget is estimated to be in the millions, specifically in the lower range of seven figures.
Phoenix will next be seen in Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux on Oct. 4.
