It's Always Sunny's Kaitlin Olson Reveals When Season 17 Will Start Filming, And The Smooth Way It Ties Into Her New ABC Show

As a devoted fan of Kaitlin Olson‘s comedic prowess, I can hardly contain my excitement for her upcoming projects! The announcement about “It’s Always Sunny” returning to our screens has made my day brighter than Sweet Dee’s infamous tan!

As a dedicated fan, I’ve been chuckling along with Kaitlin Olson as Sweet Dee in It’s Always Sunny for almost two decades. But now, she’s got me jumping with excitement! Not just because her new show, ABC’s High Potential, is set to air on the 2024 TV schedule, but mainly because she recently dropped a hint about when The Gang will be back together in Philadelphia for Season 17 of our beloved FXX series. I can hardly wait!

In “High Potential,” Olson’s character is a sharp, single mother who takes on the task of cleaning up a police department. However, she ends up working alongside a detective (portrayed by Daniel Sunjata) to assist with his cases. This sounds like it will be an exciting venture, although it appears that it might veer towards more dramatic storytelling compared to what fans are accustomed to. Fortunately, it seems Olson will be returning to her self-deprecating humor as Dee while viewers continue to watch her on ABC’s fall TV schedule.

As I chat it up with The Playlist, my buddy from the hit show Hacks spills the beans about when It’s Always Sunny will get back to production. We share a unique bond, as you might guess, being part of two shows that know how to keep the laughs coming!

Indeed, we concluded “High Potential” in October, and just a few days after that, we began filming “Sunny.” Since both projects are filmed on the same set, I’ll be busy with them throughout the spring.

It’s not too unexpected that “High Potential” and “It’s Always Sunny” share a studio lot, given they are both under the same parent company (FXX). This means Kaitlin Olson might find it easy to adjust her new work schedule since it would be similar to what she’s accustomed to. However, the scenes she’ll be filming will likely be quite different.

As a devoted gamer, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news! Olson just dropped an update that aligns perfectly with Charlie Day confirming his return to the writers’ room for ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’, starting next week. This implies the writing team will be immersed in brainstorming sessions, crafting intriguing, somewhat contentious storylines for our favorite characters – Dee, Frank, Dennis, Charlie, and Mac – for the upcoming two months or so. The filming part of the production is expected to follow soon after.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve come to understand that Olson anticipates Season 17’s production to last roughly five months, aligning with previous seasons. When I jokingly inquired if she might get a break amidst these continuous productions, she playfully replied:

As someone who has been involved in numerous projects with tight timelines, I can confidently say that I understand your situation. I appreciate your patience and I assure you that I will keep you updated. Currently, my information suggests that we are aiming for October to complete this project, but I remind you that things may change as the project progresses. I am hopeful that January will bring a smoother workflow, bringing us closer to our goal.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but ponder about the potential twists and turns that may arise in the future of “High Potential.” If the executives at ABC decide to commission additional episodes beyond the initial 13, it could potentially add layers of complexity. However, let’s hope that any contractual issues are resolved smoothly. It’ll be intriguing to witness how the network manages the situation if the show turns out to be a massive success. Here’s the latest sneak peek for your viewing pleasure!

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled about the recent addition of Garret Dillahunt to “High Potential.” Known for his stellar performances in shows like “Raising Hope” and “Fear the Walking Dead,” Dillhunt is an actor who shines in any genre. Here’s to hoping that his character’s connection on that show will pave the way for him to appear on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” during Season 17, or even beyond!

After receiving her second Primetime Emmy nomination for her outstanding performance as DJ in the show “Hacks,” Kaitlin Olson will grace your television screens when “High Potential” debuts on ABC on Tuesday, September 17, at 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
