Shah Rukh Khan REVEALS he didn’t want his Devdas character to be liked: ‘Don't want to play characters which demean women’

As an ardent fan with a heart full of nostalgia, I can’t help but reminisce about Shah Rukh Khan’s mesmerizing portrayal of Devdas. While the film was undeniably a masterpiece, it’s refreshing to hear SRK’s perspective on his character. His commitment to promoting strong female characters is commendable and truly reflects in his choices as an actor.

Shah Rukh Khan has acted in numerous films throughout his career, one of which is the 2002 period romantic drama film, “Devdas.” This movie is an adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s 1917 novel of the same name and follows the tale of Devdas Mukherjee, a man who is heartbroken and turns to alcohol as a result.

During a conversation at a recent Film Festival in Switzerland, the actor discussed his role in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. He expressed his discomfort with portraying characters that belittle women, which may explain why he wasn’t fond of his character in the movie. Shah Rukh Khan further noted that he didn’t want viewers to admire his Devdas character, who mistreats a woman.

He aimed to portray himself as a weak individual who is not worthy of admiration by anyone. “Indeed, the portrayal could be appealing. Bhansali executed it skillfully,” he said, further clarifying that he doesn’t want others to emulate the character of Devdas. During the conversation about the film, he also took a moment to discuss the drama, the dialogue, and the grandeur of the movie’s set.

Apart from expressing praise for his fellow actors Madhuri Dixit, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Jackie Shroff in “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”, the actor himself emphasized that while the character is enjoyable, it’s not suitable to emulate at home. He acknowledged that no mother would encourage their children to be like him, and he also expressed a desire for people not to be swayed by his portrayal in the film.

SRK confessed that while he didn’t mind the character itself, he wasn’t keen on its popularity due to certain problems with women portrayal. He further disclosed that his motivation was personal, as his mother admired the role. However, under the tutelage of a renowned filmmaker, he successfully shaped the character as he had envisioned.

Currently, Shah Rukh Khan is preparing for his upcoming film known as “King.” Directed by Sujoy Ghosh, this project will feature Khan’s daughter, Suhana, alongside Abhishek Bachchan, who will portray a villainous character in this action-packed movie.
