A Horror Movie from Oscar Winner Alfonso Cuarn Is Coming

As a devoted cinephile with a penchant for the extraordinary, I can confidently express my anticipation and admiration for Alfonso Cuarón’s upcoming projects. Having immersed myself in his visually captivating films, ranging from the enchanting magic of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban to the heart-stopping suspense of Gravity, I eagerly await his foray into the realm of horror.

Alfonso Cuarón, the director behind Oscar-winning films like ‘Children of Men’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’, graced the Locarno Film Festival where he received their Lifetime Achievement Award, led a masterclass on signature filmmaking techniques, and presented a fresh screening of the 1976 movie, ‘Jonah Who Will Be 25 in the Year 2000’. During his visit, he opened up about his career and shocked many when he revealed his long-held desire to create a horror movie. “I’ve always wanted to make a horror film,” shared Cuarón (as reported by Deadline), further stating:

As a film enthusiast with a keen eye for psychological horror, I have always been captivated by movies that masterfully blend reality and the supernatural, leaving me questioning my own sanity long after the credits roll. From Roman Polanski’s chilling masterpiece, “Rosemary’s Baby,” to the modern-day terror of “The Babadook,” these films have left an indelible mark on my psyche.

If the director behind Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, known for being the darkest movie in the entire Harry Potter series, decides to create a horror film without rushing into it (and certainly not a remake), then we’re eagerly looking forward to seeing the result.

Alfonso Cuarón, a renowned Mexican director, possesses an exceptional body of work that captivates viewers. His films are visually stunning creations often requiring painstaking production, which explains why he has only directed eight since his debut with the comedic “Sólo con tu pareja” in 1991. We eagerly await his ninth film, rumored to be a horror one he’s long desired to create. Known for his knack for suspense, Cuarón is also skilled at maximizing the impact of special effects on a budget. Apart from his brief involvement in the Mexican anthology TV series “La Hora Marcada,” Cuarón has yet to delve into horror. However, given his expressed intentions and our excitement, it seems high time for him to explore this genre.

Alfonso Cuarón’s newest project is not a standalone film but rather a mini-series titled “Disclaimer“, airing on Apple TV+. Based on Renée Knight’s novel, it will make its debut at the Venice Film Festival in 2024, followed by a release in October of the same year. Cuarón’s frequent collaborator Emmanuel Lubezki will join forces with Bruno Delbonnel from “Amelie” for the cinematography. The series boasts an impressive ensemble cast featuring Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline, Sacha Baron Cohen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Lesley Manville, Louis Partridge, among others. Set in the genre of psychological thriller, the story revolves around a journalist who receives a book from an anonymous author. Upon reading, she discovers that she is the protagonist and the book reveals secrets about her that no one should know.
