Producer Calls Out Joaquin Phoenix After Last-Minute Movie Exit: ‘It Has Been A Nightmare’

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen more than a few twists and turns in the world of entertainment. The latest news about Joaquin Phoenix dropping out of Todd Haynes’ untitled gay romance film left me scratching my head, much like trying to decipher an obscure quest line in a complex RPG.

Renowned for his captivating acting roles, Joaquin Phoenix continues to be sought after in the Hollywood industry. The Academy Award-winning actor has stayed active over the past few years, with plans to collaborate with director Todd Haynes on a new project. However, allegedly, Phoenix decided to withdraw from the production just days before filming was due to start, causing quite a stir. One of the film’s producers has confirmed some of these reports and described this sudden turn of events as “a nightmare.”

The star known as Napoleon was set to feature in an unnamed gay romance movie directed by Todd Haynes. Rumors suggest that the actor proposed this concept to Haynes, and they started developing it together. The filming was scheduled to commence in Guadalajara, Mexico merely five days later, but the lead from Her unexpectedly withdrew from the project. At present, there’s no definitive explanation for the star’s departure from the production. Following the news spreading, Christine Vachon – who was slated to produce the film under Killer Films – reacted on Facebook, although her post has since been deleted. Her initial statement read:

A version of this did happen. It has been a nightmare.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s been confirmed that Joaquin Phoenix won’t be replaced in his role, and the reason behind this decision remains unclear. Details about the movie are limited, but it seems to be set in the 1930s and revolves around two lovers. Known for his roles in “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Top Gun: Maverick”, Danny Ramirez was initially chosen as the co-lead. In a statement on Facebook (via The Hollywood Reporter), Christine Vachon addressed the ongoing discussion about whether only gay actors should portray gay characters. It’s important to note that both Phoenix and Ramirez are heterosexual. Vachon kindly requested understanding from the public regarding this matter.

Instead of scolding or criticizing us by saying “that’s what you get” for casting a straight actor, please refrain from doing so. This project was his own initiative, and he brought it to us. As for Killer’s history of collaborating with LGBTQ actors, crew members, and directors, his track record speaks volumes about his commitment. And for those who have already made such comments, be aware that you are only escalating an already difficult situation.

In the earlier part of this year, Joaquin Phoenix completed filming for “Eddington”, a dark comedy western production directed by Ari Aster, who also worked with him in “Beau Is Afraid”. The release date for this upcoming A24 film is yet to be determined. Coming soon, Phoenix will be preparing to promote his latest project, “Joker: Folie à Deux”, where he shares the screen with Lady Gaga. This new DC movie from Todd Phillips is a sequel to the 2019 film that earned Phoenix his first Academy Award. As of now, this follow-up is one of the most eagerly awaited films on the 2024 cinematic schedule.

It seems that Christine Vachon’s statements and previous reports suggest that Todd Haynes’ romantic film is likely completed and won’t be made again. However, whether we’ll get more information about this in the upcoming months is uncertain. Additionally, it’s unclear if Joaquin Phoenix’s team will provide any updates on the situation.

People who want to watch the mentioned actor on the big screen can catch him in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” opening in theaters on October 4th.
