After Toy Story 5 Is Announced, The Internet Has Some Blistering (And Funny) Takes

As a long-time Pixar enthusiast and someone who’s grown up with Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the Toy Story gang, I must say that the D23 2024 event was a mixed bag for me. On one hand, it was thrilling to catch a glimpse of what’s in store for our beloved franchises. On the other hand, the reactions to the announcements, particularly those about Toy Story 5, have left me scratching my head.

Title event D23 2024 has concluded, and as someone who attended, I must say it was generally well-received. Disney enthusiasts were granted a comprehensive peek into the future of both film studios and theme parks. The majority of fans appear content with the updates, but there are several points of contention, particularly surrounding the announcements about Toy Story 5, which sparked humorous and critical responses across the internet.

Previously, Bob Iger had shared the news about the production of Toy Story 5. However, during the weekend, it was officially confirmed that franchise writer Andrew Stanton would be directing this film, along with providing some details regarding its storyline. It’s worth noting that Toy Story 5 is one of a few upcoming Pixar movies that are sequels, and there have been whispers that Disney might be leaning too much on their franchises.

Instead of movie trilogies being almost inevitable for movies that achieve success, Toy Story has gone beyond this norm by producing not just one more film but now a fifth. Interestingly, the Toy Story intellectual property isn’t alone in having a fifth installment slated for 2026; however, the response to Shrek 5 has been significantly different.

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’ve been pondering over the contrast between Toy Story 5 and Shrek 5. While Toy Story 5 seems like an extension that’s pushing the franchise boundaries a bit too far for my taste, Shrek 5, on the other hand, feels more like the natural evolution of a beloved story everyone’s been eagerly anticipating.

It appears that the upcoming Shrek film has sparked greater enthusiasm among viewers compared to Toy Story’s next installment. This could be due to the longer absence of the Shrek franchise, as it’s been about 15 years since its last release. Some people, however, perceive Toy Story 5 as a repetitive concept and believe Pixar should prioritize more innovative ideas instead.

Apart from the upcoming “Toy Story 5”, Pixar also has two fresh concepts in development – one being the science fiction adventure titled “Elio”, which we received additional details about at D23, and another new project called “Hoppers”. It’s exciting to know that there are original ideas in the pipeline. However, some might find the plot of “Toy Story 5” less innovative as it appears to revisit a worn-out theme.

Toy Story 1 (as a gamer): “Imagine if the toys in my collection could come to life…”

Although details about Toy Story 5 are scarce for now, it’s likely that the narrative will delve deeper than just the obvious conflict between toys and technology. The movie’s release is still a few years away, but when it does come out, the franchise will be nearing its 30-year mark, which means some of the original viewers may have grown and changed significantly since they first started watching.

Many people haven’t lost their enthusiasm for the upcoming “Toy Story 5”. Over the course of four movies, it has maintained its value and significance for some, so there’s a good chance that the fifth installment won’t disappoint.

Regardless of whether the world is ready for another installment, namely Toy Story 5, it’s set to release, so let’s cross our fingers that it lives up to expectations. Many people felt much the same about Toy Story 4, stating that it wasn’t necessary. However, despite these views, the movie was praised by critics and audiences alike, earning Pixar and Disney a staggering $1 billion worldwide. If the fifth movie can match this success, everyone will be more than satisfied. For now, you can watch the first four chapters on Disney+ with a subscription.
