As someone who grew up during the 1980s, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia and anticipation for Peacock’s upcoming series, Hysteria! Peacock‘s latest production, titled Hysteria! , is transporting viewers back to the 1980s and the Satanic Panic era in a chilling series premiere. Save the date for October 18, 2024, as Julie Bowen takes center stage in this darkly comic thriller, set 13 days before Halloween.

In a surprising twist, the trailer for “Hysteria!” kicks off with a seemingly pleasant suburban tableau featuring Julie Bowen’s character gracefully dancing in her kitchen to Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is a Place On Earth.” However, the atmosphere takes a dramatic turn as an earthquake strikes and a sinister face materializes from the microwave! A delightful blend of camp, wit, and the supernatural, oh my!

The show focuses on a band of outsiders from high school who spot a chance in the escalating anxiety about their rumored supernatural actions. With “Hysteria!” set to unfold, you’ll get eight 1-hour episodes, releasing together on the premiere day – that’s 8 hours of thrilling excitement, perfect for Halloween!

Here’s the full synopsis:

During the late 1980s’ Satanic Panic, when our cherished high school quarterback mysteriously vanishes, a group of underdog heavy metal musicians, ostracized by their peers, seize the opportunity to boost their popularity. They do this by creating an image as a satanic metal band, tapping into the town’s growing fascination with the occult. However, strange incidents such as murders, abductions, and supposed paranormal activities begin to occur, setting off a chain of events that eventually implicates them. This inadvertently triggers a hunt led by leather-clad vigilantes, who are convinced they’re dealing with a coven of Satanists.

Produced by Matthew Scott Kane (of “Stitchers”) and David Goodman (from “The Orville”), “Hysteria!” transcends its period setting to offer insightful commentary on contemporary fears and apprehensions. According to the official press release accompanying the trailer, Kane and Goodman themselves describe it thus:

“Excitement! That’s what this story captures – the duality of fear that comes with being young and daring, yet yearning for something more, and the shock of maturity as you discover that the world you once knew has changed dramatically. We aim to create a shared experience where parents and their children (of suitable age) can immerse themselves in the thrills, the laughter, the music, and the essence of Excitement! together. After all, growing up can be terrifying, just as parenting can be too.”

Joining Bowen is an ensemble of actors that also features Anna Camp, Emjay Anthony, Chiara Aurelia, Kezil Curtis, Nikki Hahn, and Nolan North. Additionally, the legendary Bruce Campbell will make a special guest appearance in this production.

Universal’s movie, titled “Hysteria! “, not only delivers an engaging storyline but also boasts a talented group of people working behind the scenes. Kane and Goodman share executive producer roles with John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who are also involved in the upcoming film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Chris Bender and Jake Weiner from Good Fear Content are also part of the team. The first and last episodes were directed by Jonathon Vogt-Roberts, known for his work on “Kong: Skull Island“.

If you enjoy ’80s nostalgia, suspenseful stories, or just want a gripping show to watch before Halloween, ‘Hysteria!’ seems like an exhilarating journey that delves into the sinister aspects of communal life and the repercussions of widespread fear. Therefore, stock up on popcorn, mark your calendars for October 18, and prepare yourself to be both excited and spooked as Peacock’s newest series will also air simultaneously on USA Network and SyFy.
