Netflix Teases “Legendary” Showdown in ‘Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef’ Trailer

As a longtime spectator of the competitive eating world, I can hardly contain my excitement for this upcoming showdown between Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi! These two legends have been locked in a gastronomic battle for nearly two decades now, and it’s truly a sight to behold.

The Paris Olympics may have ended, but another highly anticipated competition is coming up soon.

Netflix unveils a sneak peek of its upcoming showdown between Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi, two legendary competitive eaters. The trailer builds anticipation for their long-awaited confrontation, as they prepare to compete against each other after fifteen years, in a winner-takes-all rematch dubbed “Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef.” This epic face-off will unfold at the HyperX Arena Las Vegas, Luxor Hotel & Casino, and will stream live on Netflix on September 2nd at 12 p.m. Pacific Time / 3 p.m. Eastern Time.

Joey Chestnut, the hot dog eating champion known for consuming 76 in just 10 minutes, has been given another chance to prove himself after being barred from participating in Nathan’s Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest due to his six consecutive wins. This ban came about because Chestnut entered into an endorsement agreement with Impossible Foods. In simpler terms, Joey’s victory streak led him to win the contest six times in a row, but he was temporarily disqualified because he signed a partnership with a company that makes plant-based food products. Now, he’ll have another opportunity to compete and potentially reclaim his title.

Chestnut made it clear in a social media post that he does not have any contract with MLE or Nathan’s, and they seem to be altering the rules from previous years regarding who he can collaborate with. This appears to be the reason for his ban, but it doesn’t affect the July 4th contest.

Takeru Kobayashi, a well-known figure in the world of competitive eating, will get another opportunity to regain the record that he previously held.

Back in 2001, I, an eager newcomer, took part in Nathan’s Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest and astonishingly devoured 50 hot dogs within just 12 minutes, breaking the existing record. Over the next six years, I reigned supreme at this competition, until 2007 when Joey Chestnut dethroned me by consuming an impressive 66 hot dogs to my 63. Despite this setback, I never shied away from competition and in 2009, I outdid Chestnut at the Krystal Square Off World Hamburger Eating Championship, devouring a whopping 93 hamburgers!

In 2011, Kobayashi broke the world record for eating hot dogs by consuming 69 in a single competition that was broadcast live. This record-breaking event took place as a form of protest after he was prevented from participating in Nathan’s annual July 4th contest due to a disagreement over his contract with Major League Eating, the organization responsible for the competition. A decade later, Joey Chestnut beat this record by eating 76 hot dogs during the 2021 Nathan’s event.
