Broadway Box Office: ‘The Wiz,’ ‘Illinoise’ See Final Weeks Surge

As a long-time Broadway enthusiast with decades of theater-going under my belt, this week’s box office numbers have left me absolutely spellbound! The revival of “The Wiz” breaking its own record and standing tall among industry giants like “Wicked,” “The Lion King,” and “Hamilton” is a testament to the power of reimagining timeless stories.

In its penultimate week on Broadway, the production of The Wiz earned nearly $1.7 million, setting a new high for its run and securing a spot among the top five in the industry for that particular week.

The Amber Ruffin-revised play, titled “The Revival,” began running at the Marquis Theatre on March 29 and is set to end its run on Aug. 18. For the past week, “Wicked” earned $2.23 million, followed closely by “The Lion King” with $2.14 million (one of its shows being complimentary), and “Hamilton” with $1.96 million, making them the top three highest-grossing musicals during that period.

As a theater-loving gamer, I’ve got some exciting news to share! The dance musical adaptation of Sufjan Stevens’ album, “Illinoise,” concluded its run on August 10th, marking the highest grossing week during its entire run, with an impressive total of nearly $1.2 million. This spectacular show, which scooped up a Tony Award for Best Choreography, began its previews at the St. James Theatre on April 24th. It was quite a journey!

After a record-breaking run at the box office for several weeks, The Outsiders, which recently won a Tony Award for Best Musical, saw its streak end. Despite this, the show continued to attract large audiences, earning $1.49 million during the week, a slight decrease of $1,376 compared to the previous week’s total. The musical’s capacity remained impressive, with over 102% of seats filled.

In summary, the total earnings from all 26 Broadway shows amounted to $30,768,450 last week, which was nearly identical to the previous week’s figure. The theater industry is gearing up for its bustling fall season, with several notable productions set to premiere. On September 12, “The Roommate,” starring Mia Farrow and Patti LuPone, will open, followed by “The Hills of California,” a play by Jez Butterworth on September 29, and “McNeal,” led by Robert Downey Jr., opening on September 30.

Once Upon A Mattress, starring Sutton Foster, Michael Urie and Ana Gasteyer, opened Aug. 12.
