As a devoted admirer of Bollywood, I must say that my profound appreciation for Shah Rukh Khan has only grown deeper after learning about his unique preferences in film genres. While he is undeniably the king of romance on-screen, off-screen he surprises us with his unconventional choices. His recent admission that action movies are his favorite and romantic films his least, comes as a refreshing twist to the public image we have of him.
Shah Rukh Khan, famously recognized as the foremost romantic hero in Bollywood due to movies such as Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and Dil To Pagal Hai, among others, might lead one to presume that the legendary actor favors romantic films. However, this isn’t accurate; in fact, he considers it his “least favorite” genre. Remarkably, Shah Rukh Khan has shown admiration for Tom Cruise’s film performances as well.
In a conversation with Variety, Shah Rukh Khan explained his decision to return to action movies like Pathaan and Jawan following a short break. He admitted that he hadn’t made a full-fledged action film in the past, and during his hiatus, this was something he felt he needed to do. During the interview, he also mentioned his admiration for Tom Cruise and the Mission Impossible series, stating that these films usually leave him content more than not.
Later in our conversation, he shared his preferred and least preferred movie genres he enjoys working in. The actor from Dunki mentioned his surprise at being labeled as a romantic hero. Interestingly, this wasn’t a role he had ever envisioned for himself, contrasting with the general public perception. As it turns out, he was categorized in this way due to the popularity and timelessness of a few romantic films he starred in.
Apart from sharing with the press about his ambition, he expressed his desire for a space in his home adorned with movie posters spanning various genres he’s been involved in. He explained, “It’s not an act of vanity. When I examine my body of work, each film should resonate with a genre that I’ve grown up appreciating.” Furthermore, he clarified that his viewing preferences aren’t confined to any single genre.
When he watches movies, he cruises from action to science-fiction films, dystopian world films, off-beat, human drama, and horror films. While he expressed his love for courtroom dramas and thrillers, he admitted “Strangely, my least favorite is romantic films.”
In terms of his career, Shah Rukh Khan is set to start filming a new action movie called “King.” The film is being directed by Sujoy Ghosh and features Shah Rukh’s daughter, Suhana Khan, as well as actor Abhishek Bachchan.
