20th Zurich Film Festival will roll out the red carpet for new films by Steve McQueen, Sean Baker, Edward Berger, and Gia Coppola in its prestigious gala program.
2024’s BFI London Film Festival (LFF) will kick off with the international premiere of “Blitz,” directed by Steve McQueen and featuring Saoirse Ronan and Harris Dickinson. This film, also starring in Zurich, has garnered much anticipation. Meanwhile, “Conclave,” a Vatican conspiracy thriller helmed by Berger and boasting an impressive cast including Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, and John Lithgow, will make its appearance at ZFF after screenings at Toronto and San Sebastian. Lastly, “Anora,” directed by Baker and winner of the Palme d’Or, will arrive at the Swiss festival following a screening at TIFF. This film stars Mikey Madison as a Brighton Beach sex worker who becomes romantically involved with the son of a Russian oligarch.
Sönke Wortmann’s film titled “Der Spitzname“, which is the third installment of his successful German comedy series based on the French movie “Le prénom” from 2012, will make its global debut in Zurich.
As a lifelong movie enthusiast and someone who has attended numerous film festivals over the years, I must admit that I am particularly excited about this year’s gala lineup in Zurich. The diverse selection of films showcases an impressive array of talent, from established directors to up-and-coming stars, and promises a wide range of genres to appeal to every moviegoer.
The ZFF gala schedule additionally features multiple dramas based on real-life incidents. These include Tim Fehlbaum’s historical thriller “September 5,” which portrays the terrorist attacks during the 1972 Munich Olympics, starring Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, and Ben Chaplin; Michael Krummacher’s “Landesverräter,” a tale about the first Swiss individual sentenced to death for treason; and Icíar Bollaín’s “Soy Nevenka,” inspired by Nevenka Fernández, a Spanish economist who became the first woman to successfully prosecute a Spanish politician for workplace sexual harassment.
On September 19, Zurich plans to reveal its complete roster for the year 2024. The Zurich International Film Festival will take place from October 3 to October 13.
