As a dedicated sports enthusiast with years of immersion into the world of ESPN, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia as I hear about the departure of Sam Ponder and Robert Griffin III. These two personalities have been staples in my Sunday and Monday night routines, offering insightful analysis and engaging banter that has enriched my viewing experience.
ESPN is still reshuffling its team of on-screen personalities, as it announced the departure of Robert Griffin III and Sam Ponder on Thursday (the day in question).
Previously, Ponder was associated with ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown,” whereas Griffin, also known as “RGIII,” had been an analyst on the pregame show for ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” – the program titled “Monday Night Countdown” – and various college football games. This year, ESPN brought Jason Kelce aboard to contribute to “Monday Night Countdown.”
Based on information from a reliable source, it has been communicated to both Griffin and Ponder earlier today that the decision has been made. They are each entitled to receive what their contracts stipulate. It is speculated that Ponder has approximately one year left in her contract, while Griffin has around two years remaining.
The action was characterized as a strategic financial and business maneuver, planned to occur prior to the commencement of the NFL season, and before Disney’s fiscal year concludes next month. There’s speculation that ESPN might undergo further talent adjustments; however, it’s unlikely these changes will resemble last year’s significant overhaul, which saw the dismissal of numerous hosts, analysts, announcers, and others, including high-profile figures like Jeff Van Gundy, Suzy Kolber, and Max Kellerman.
The Athletic first reported the exits of Ponder and Griffin. ESPN declined to comment.
