‘The Critics Said It Sucked Balls’: Halle Berry Said She Loved Working On Catwoman Despite The Haters, And One Reason The Movie’s ‘So Vindicating’ At 20

As a gamer who’s been around the block more times than I care to count, I can’t help but feel a kinship with Halle Berry when it comes to her role as Catwoman. Just like how I’ve been bashed for loving some less-than-popular games, Berry has had her fair share of haters for her portrayal of the iconic antihero.

Reflecting on the past two decades, it seems like only yesterday when Halle Berry took on the role of Catwoman in live-action. Yet, the character of Patience Phillips/Catwoman emerged as an antihero that we can’t help but adore, despite the mixed reactions from critics towards the superhero movie. Despite the less than favorable reviews, Berry shared her fondness for the film 20 years later and explained why it holds a special place in her heart, referring to it as “so vindicating.”

At the 25th Golden Raspberry Awards, the film “Catwoman” received seven nominations and won three of them, including Worst Picture and Worst Actress. Halle Berry famously accepted her Worst Actress Award by thanking Warner Bros. for casting her in a movie she referred to as a “terrible, awful film.” However, the actress from “Monster’s Ball” confessed that she disliked it solely because of the critics. Twenty years later, during an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Berry expressed positive sentiments about “Catwoman” in spite of the negative reception: the film still holds a special place for her.

Initially, I didn’t care for it as some critics panned it quite harshly. However, it seems to have grown in popularity among younger generations who’ve discovered it online. They absolutely adore it! [Laughs]

Back in the day, I was one of the many fans who adored Catwoman when it first hit the screens. However, it seems that her fanbase has significantly grown since then – and rightfully so! The trailer for Matt Reeves’ The Batman, featuring Zoë Kravitz as the feline antihero, stirred up a wave of nostalgia among us old-school fans, reminding us of Halle Berry’s captivating portrayal in the 2004 movie.

As a gamer, I can relate! After enduring years of criticism for the movie “Catwoman”, it feels great now to know there are some fans out there who appreciated it, despite its box office struggles. Halle Berry shared with Jimmy Fallon that these positive reactions have been quite vindicating for her, nearly twenty years later.

Feels validating indeed, doesn’t it? Now that they think it’s trendy, one might wonder what all the fuss was about earlier. In essence, I feel quite validated and even a bit triumphant in this situation.

As a huge fan, I can’t help but chuckle at Jimmy Fallon bestowing Halle Berry with the humorous superhero moniker “Bratwoman”! If her dream of reprising Catwoman ever materializes, imagine her commanding presence on the director’s chair as “Bratwoman”! Berry, having made her directorial debut with Netflix’s Bruised, certainly seems qualified to revamp her former DC character. The actress reminisced about feeling that Catwoman was “a bit soft,” saving women from corrupt face cream. I wholeheartedly agree; a kickass character like this deserves a mission where the stakes are significantly higher than that!

Two decades on, Halle Berry still cherishes her role as Catwoman, even amidst critics who deemed it less than stellar. She finds it incredibly validating to witness a new wave of admiration for the film. As a new generation discovers the allure of the leather-clad feline vigilante, it seems the once-maligned movie is experiencing a reevaluation. Don’t forget to catch Berry in her latest project, “The Union,” alongside Mark Wahlberg, now streaming on Netflix with your subscription.
