As a longtime Netflix subscriber who has seen more than my fair share of cancellations, it’s become a bit of a grim tradition to bid farewell to yet another series. The latest casualty is “Buying Beverly Hills,” a show that, while not groundbreaking, offered a peek into the glitzy world of high-end real estate.
As a dedicated gamer and Netflix enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment when my favorite shows get the chop. It seems like Netflix has this knack for canceling shows swiftly, often after just one or two seasons. Over the past year, they’ve made some moves that have resulted in several of their originals being on the list of shows ending in 2024. Now, it appears another series has joined those ranks. While I wasn’t expecting it to last forever, at least it managed to make it past the first season.
The popular reality TV show “Beverly Hills” (one of Netflix’s offerings) has been axed after completing two seasons. This information originates from Deadline and was made public a few months following the second season’s debut. Usually, streaming services don’t provide formal explanations for such cancellations. However, industry insiders revealed that the decision was likely due to the viewership figures not meeting the production expenses.
Much like the series Selling Sunset, which debuted in 2019, Buying Beverly Hills centered around the staff of The Agency, a top-tier real estate brokerage firm. The main character was Mauricio Umansky, who is the co-founder and CEO of this company. Prior to getting his own show, Umansky gained recognition through his appearances on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, which highlighted his marriage to (now separated wife) Kyle Richards. Buying Beverly Hills premiered in 2022 and eventually came back for its second (and concluding) season in March 2024.
Given how often Netflix cancels shows, it’s hardly unexpected that another one has been terminated. To add to this, the platform offers “Selling Sunset” and its spinoffs, along with other real estate-focused series. Consequently, viewers in this genre won’t lack entertainment options. This cancellation might be disappointing for fans of the now-canceled show, but they should appreciate it given that many shows don’t get such a chance to continue.
Over the past few years, Netflix has ended several of its original shows after just one season. For instance, the series “The Brothers Sun,” which debuted this March, was unexpectedly cancelled after its first season. Many might recall the cancellation of “1899” and “Inside Job,” both of which were also axed after a single season. Similarly, in 2023, Netflix pulled the plug on “Agent Elvis,” “Lockwood & Co.,” and “Obliterated” – all after their initial seasons.
Many other streamers have made a name for themselves by quickly ending shows. Recently, Hulu terminated “Death and Other Details” after only one batch of episodes. Similarly, Max decided to end the one-season show “The Girls on the Bus”. Just recently, Disney+ also canceled “Renegade Nell”, adding another example to this trend in programming. Unfortunately, audiences have seen a significant number of shows being taken off the air within a short span of time.
Regarding Netflix, it’s possible that some of its other original shows may be canceled before the end of the year. This is a regrettable possibility but an inevitable part of the streaming industry. We can only wait and see which series might get the axe, especially those with multiple seasons like “Buying Beverly Hills”.
