Similar to numerous TV series, production was postponed due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Fortunately, filming has now concluded, though an exact release date hasn’t been disclosed yet, with a tentative premiere slated for October. The fourth season will encompass 10 episodes in total, and as of now, Netflix remains silent on whether they plan to divide the season into two parts like several popular shows currently do.

In the premiere of Season 4, titled “The Blackbeard Hunt,” it seems that the Pogues are now on a mission to find Blackbeard’s long-lost treasure, which could be the most significant prize they’ve pursued yet. Towards the end of Season 3, an enigmatic figure presented them with Captain’s Log, containing the precise voyage path that Blackbeard’s ship took before it sank in 1718, taking all his gold with it. Therefore, we might expect the Pogues to venture into treasure hunting as a paid service in the upcoming season.

In Season 4, the primary cast members from the beginning will reappear, along with some fresh faces. These newcomers include J. Anthony Crane, Pollyanna McIntosh, and Brianna Brown. Rigo Sanchez is also joining the show as Lightner, a potentially menacing outsider who may challenge the Pogues. Furthermore, Mia Challis will be playing Ruthie, who is expected to form a strong bond with Topper.

The Outer Banks series unfolds as a gripping mystery drama, where alliances and emotions frequently shift. Although the thrill of exploration and treasure hunting is captivating, it’s the deep connections among the Pogues that truly define the show. Over three seasons, the principal characters have encountered numerous challenges yet consistently find ways to push forward when their schemes are foiled, whether by adversaries like the Camerons or any other hurdles they encounter along the way. In the Season 3 finale, the Pogues ultimately celebrate a triumph as they discover the gold in El Dorado; since then, co-creator Josh Pate has shared his reasoning behind this win:

“It was clear that securing a victory was crucial, but it turned out to be a challenging one. Our aim was to make the spectators believe they had achieved something meaningful, not that their efforts were in vain.”

However, the win was bittersweet as they also had to come to terms with the deaths of both Ward and Big John. After all this time, fans are wondering where the characters are as a group and individually in Season 4. The reveal of a new surf shop shows the group in seemingly good spirits. However, things in Kildare are never that simple. It seems like the new season will unpack all the emotional developments from the 18-month time skip and onward. Pate has also since shared his approach and ideas for Season 4:

“They should take a moment to pause and allow all the consequences to unfold. For the upcoming Season 4, we’re brainstorming ways to achieve that balance between the thrilling and unpredictable events, and deep emotional resonance. This pause helps maintain authenticity, which in turn enables us to execute more daring plot twists.”
