Walton Goggins Teases The Ghoul’s Future in Fallout Season 2

Walton Goggins Teases The Ghoul's Future in Fallout Season 2

As a seasoned film enthusiast and a survivor of countless post-apocalyptic cinematic wastelands, I must say that the recent success of Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout has left me both exhilarated and intrigued. With Walton Goggins’ mesmerizing performance as The Ghoul earning an Emmy nomination and the show garnering 16 Emmy nods overall, it’s clear that this is not just another dystopian tale but a masterclass in storytelling.

Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout has achieved significant acclaim on their streaming platform, amassing a total of 16 Emmy nominations and receiving praise from both critics and viewers. Walton Goggins was nominated for an Emmy Award for his portrayal of The Ghoul, and the actor is already planning his character’s trajectory in Season 2. The gripping conclusion of Season 1 hinted that The Ghoul’s family might still be alive in the Wasteland, and the show ended with him embarking on a journey with Lucy (Ella Purnell) to locate Hank McLean (Kyle MacLachlan) in New Vegas in search of answers.

In an interview after his Emmy nomination, Walton Goggins shared what he’s looking forward to delving into during the upcoming second season. Amazon Prime Video has confirmed the return of the series for Season 2, and Goggins anticipates that it will delve deeper into the sinister aspects of Vault-Tec in future seasons. Unlike Lucy and other inhabitants of the vaults, The Ghoul survived the effects of nuclear fallout due to mutations from the radioactive environment. As The Ghoul and Lucy embark on their journey together in Season 2, Goggins hopes that the show will reveal more about their extraordinary pasts and shared experiences. He stated:

“I’m not completely certain about the outcome, but it seems unlikely that he wouldn’t be influenced by the new information he possesses. The socio-economic/political aspects of this tale intrigue me immensely, especially the dialogue between two individuals who have starkly different perspectives due to their economic status, privilege, and circumstances. I’m also eager to delve into the dynamic between Ella [Purnell] and myself, where one character has access to a wealth of information while the other is informed-less, and how this disparity shapes their interactions and future in this world.”

In the catastrophic nuclear disaster of 2077 (or at least an alternate reality), a fortunate few found refuge in subterranean shelters known as vaults. These vaults, constructed by the philanthropically-disguised Vault-Tec Corporation and its financial backers, were actually used for clandestine research. Worldwide, Vault-Tec engaged in macabre and morally repugnant experiments. Among these horrifying tests were examinations into the psychological impact of human sacrifice, genetic manipulation of inhabitants, and the creation of a vault where one woman lived alongside a hundred men (with another vault designed to mimic the opposite conditions). The nature of these experiments was gruesome, inhumane, and often peculiar.

Apart from exposing that Lucy’s residence, Vault 33, served as a venue for a prolonged study on corporate management, the Prime Video series Fallout unexpectedly detonated (literally) another piece of information – Vault-Tec was instrumental in instigating the nuclear conflict between America and the communist powers of China and Russia. This revelation left both the audience and the character played by Goggins, Cooper Howard (pre-war version of The Ghoul), stunned, as it turned out that his wife had masterminded the atomic catastrophe. Eager to delve further into the consequences (intended pun) of this disclosure, Goggins expresses eagerness for Season 2:

“I’m deeply intrigued by understanding the motivations behind this group of individuals who seem to be working towards the end of the world, and what role their self-proclaimed ‘prophet’ plays. I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but if there is indeed some underlying truth or secret society like the Illuminati, it’s hard to say for certain. However, my everyday life revolves around enjoying good food in different cities and unwinding with a nice cocktail at the end of the day. Yet, I find the concept of delving into these theories or imagining what-ifs captivating.”

Even though the Fallout universe has its share of grimness, Walton Goggins is thrilled about delving into the show’s complex themes. However, he also shared his eagerness to “can’t wait to blow some stuff up, dude!” as he puts it. The creators of Fallout, Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, are tirelessly working to keep fans from having too long a wait between seasons. As of now, there’s no confirmed release date for Fallout Season 2.
