Robert Downey Jr. Finally Explains His Doctor Doom Casting

As a cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that Robert Downey Jr.’s transformation from Iron Man to Doctor Doom is nothing short of extraordinary. The intricacies of how this came to be are as fascinating as any blockbuster plotline.

The appearance of Robert Downey Jr. in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is taking a different turn than many fans anticipated, and his selection as Doctor Doom has sparked further debate among Marvel enthusiasts, following the decision made by Kevin Feige. Now, the ex-Iron Man actor has been disclosing details about the unexpected reveal at San Diego Comic-Con and shedding light on the conversation with Feige that culminated in this significant event.

In an interview on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Downey Jr. spoke about his casting as Doom for the first time, sharing a little more detail on how it came to be. He began:

Around a year ago, I found myself in regular contact with Kevin Feige. We’re friends, you see. Jon Favreau, Kevin, and I have been keeping in touch. I’m quite close to the Russo Brothers too; we’ve got other business ventures as well. So, there’s this small circle of associates, and I felt an impulse to approach Bob Iger with an idea. This idea was not related to the Cinematic Universe but could potentially benefit the parks and all their location-based entertainment.

In conversation with Feige, Robert Downey Jr. and his spouse Susan found out that the head honcho at Marvel is always brainstorming ideas. Specifically, he had an ingenious plan for how Downey Jr. could rejoin the franchise on-screen without simply reviving the Iron Man character. He went on to explain:

As a movie enthusiast, I found myself in a captivating conversation with Feige at some point, where he casually mentioned, “I’ve been thinking… if you were to return, it could be as…” Susan paused, her curiosity piqued, “Hold on, come back as who?” It was then that we both came to appreciate the sheer brilliance of this man’s mind. A mastermind of creative thought, he posed questions that left us questioning how to move forward without regression, how to surpass expectations instead of meeting them, and most importantly, how not to disappoint. He proposed Victor Von Doom, a character I later discovered, left me awestruck with his sheer potential for the role.

Later, Kevin goes, ‘Let’s get Victor Von Doom right. Let’s get that right.’

In a recent conversation with Kevin, I found myself asking for permission to speak with Bob Iger. He seemed intrigued and asked me to elaborate. I explained that my visit to his house had been something truly extraordinary – one of many unforgettable experiences in my career.

Despite a prolonged anticipation for Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday, there are numerous hints suggesting that fans might not have to wait as long as expected to witness the actor embodying this iconic Marvel villain. According to the grapevine, next year’s Fantastic Four: First Steps could mirror the post-credits Thanos tease from The Avengers and unveil the primary antagonist of the Multiverse Saga’s upcoming storyline.

Title “Fantastic Four: First Steps” promises a significant addition to the Marvel universe. The previous attempt to adapt Marvel’s founding team for the big screen in 2015 was unfortunately one of the weaker entries in the Marvel comic book film series. However, Matt Shakman’s upcoming movie steers clear of one of that film’s major flaws – the tiring retelling of the origin story. Yet, it still faces several challenges to avoid becoming part of the list of disappointing films in 2023.

It’s said that the movie takes place in a different world and Galactus is confirmed as the antagonist. However, this doesn’t rule out the possibility of Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Victor Von Doom. Since he’s one of the Fantastic Four’s primary enemies in Marvel Comics, it provides an ideal setting to introduce Doom and hint at his evolution across time and dimensions into the most formidable adversary the Marvel Cinematic Universe has faced so far.

Before the movie “Fantastic Four: First Steps” hits theaters in 2025, we’re left guessing if and how Downey Jr. might join the cast. Marvel Studios are known for keeping their cards close to their chests, so any information about Doctor Doom is likely one of the most closely guarded secrets across the entire Multiverse Saga. Whether or not Downey Jr. appears in the film, “Fantastic Four: First Steps” will be released on July 25, 2025.

Avengers: Doomsday
will release in cinemas on May 1, 2026.
