Did you know Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor slashed their fee for Madhur Bhandarkar? Fashion director spills beans amidst star entourage debate

As a long-time admirer of Madhur Bhandarkar’s work, I am truly inspired by his dedication to creating socially-driven narratives that have significantly impacted the careers of several actresses. His ability to extract powerful performances from his actors, even with limited budgets, is nothing short of remarkable.

Madhur Bhandarkar is well-known for altering the professional paths of numerous actresses through his stories that tackle social issues. In the heat of discussions about star entourages, this filmmaker has spoken about collaborating with some of India’s top actresses such as Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. He openly acknowledged that these actresses reduced their payment in accordance with the movie’s budget constraints.

In a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Madhur was inquired about potential issues related to star entourages. He promptly shared that each actress reduced their payment when they collaborated with him. “Given my budget of ₹1.5 crore for Chandni Bar, Tabu didn’t demand a fee for the movie. Instead, she earned money based on territories like Bombay or Delhi, and nothing else beyond that. She demonstrated an incredible level of dedication.”

After mentioning a few actresses, the director explained that Raveena Tandon (for Satta) and Bipasha Basu (for Corporate) agreed to lower their fees. In similar circumstances, Priyanka Chopra (Fashion) and Kareena Kapoor (Heroine) also reduced their prices. Madhur disclosed that they didn’t demand the standard market rate from him since they were eager to be part of these films, as the success of the entire project relied heavily on them, so everyone agreed to lower their fees.

Bhandarkar was a filmmaker during his era who managed to be budget-friendly yet still gained both critical and financial acclaim for his narratives. In 2008, one of his notable works titled “Fashion 2008” featured Priyanka Chopra as the main character alongside Arbaaz Khan, Mughda Godse, Samir Soni, Kitu Gidwani, and others.

The story centers around a young woman from a small town who dreams of success in the modeling world. Notably, Priyanka earned the National Film Award for Best Actress for her role in this film. In contrast, Madhur’s Heroine (2012) delved into the life of a waning celebrity, with Kareena Kapoor playing the lead character, alongside Arjun Rampal, Randeep Hooda, and Divya Dutta among others.

In four separate occasions, filmmaker Madhur has been honored with the prestigious National Film Award. His films, such as “Chandni Bar” (2001), which won for Best Film on Social Issues, “Page 3” (2005) which took home the award for Best Feature Film, and “Traffic Signal” (2007) recognized for Best Direction, have all earned top honors in their respective categories.
