An SNL Creative Shared BTS Story About Emma Stone Guest Hosting, And I Don’t Think We’re Given Enough Credit To The Insane Quick Changes

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of binge-watching Saturday Night Live (SNL), I can confidently say that the series has become a staple in my weekly entertainment diet, much like how pizza and beer are to a Friday night. The 50th season is approaching, and I find myself in awe of the intricacies that unfold behind the scenes, particularly the quick changes and last-minute adjustments that make each episode a unique spectacle.

Preparing for its remarkable 50th season this fall according to the 2024 TV lineup, Saturday Night Live continues to leave me puzzled about the happenings backstage. Given that it’s a live variety sketch series, the unpredictable is always a given. This applies not only to unexpected events on-air but also the fast-paced activities involved in quick changes and gearing up for the next act. An SNL creative recently shared an anecdote from when Emma Stone hosted, which gives us a glimpse into the chaos behind the scenes.

Actress from “Poor Things” achieved a significant career milestone by appearing as a guest host on “Saturday Night Live” in December, thereby entering the exclusive Five-Timers Club. Department heads Jodi Mancuso (hair) and Louie Zakarian shared some fascinating backstage tales about Season 49 of “SNL” with Variety, including an intriguing sketch featuring Stone.

In this specific drawing, Stone represented a record producer character. During the act, she wore an attire that included a salt-and-pepper wig with a miniature mustache and a cigarette, held in her hand. Mancuso shared that initially, Stone’s wig was darker, but they decided to make her appear older after observing one rehearsal. Moreover, Zakarian mentioned that Stone wanted to look like she was balding and had more facial hair, but this wasn’t feasible due to the rapid costume changes required for the performance.

Following three unsuccessful tries at growing fuller facial hair, they finally decided on a slim mustache, as explained by Mancuso.

Appearing straightforward to spectators, it occasionally proved tricky. There were numerous discussions and alterations surrounding that character, [Stone], which [he/she] adored deeply. The complexity wasn’t immediately apparent; in fact, it involved more than met the eye. They decided to include a cigarette at the last moment, and glasses nearly became part of her attire as well. There were several modifications made to it.

While watching Saturday Night Live (SNL), you might not ponder about what transpires backstage. Given that each skit swiftly follows the one preceding it (excluding commercial breaks), it’s only logical that wardrobe needs to be simple to put on and off, particularly for the guest host. This underscores the fact that a lot happens with the quick costume changes, and it’s advantageous that everyone experiences an adrenaline rush, as Mancuso explained.

Once you’re immersed in it, you’re facing its relentless tide. You strive to please everyone involved, becoming an integral part of the process. Now, it’s deeply ingrained within us. When it’s effortless, you find yourself humming a carefree tune and growing restless with boredom.

Over nearly five decades of episodes, Saturday Night Live (SNL) consistently adapts swiftly to ensure each sketch runs smoothly and transitions seamlessly into the next. The anticipation for the upcoming skit is always high as you watch the talented cast members and hosts rise to the challenges and bring laughs. As we look forward to Season 50, one thing’s certain – there will be plenty more surprising quick changes in store!

The lineup for Season 50 of Saturday Night Live (SNL) hasn’t been revealed yet, but given that it’s set to air in September, we won’t have to wait much longer.
