DNC, Day 3: Rapid-Fire Speeches and a Harrowing Plea for a Hamas Hostage

DNC, Day 3: Rapid-Fire Speeches and a Harrowing Plea for a Hamas Hostage

As a passionate supporter of progressive values and equal rights, I found Wednesday’s speeches at the Democratic National Convention truly inspiring. The unwavering commitment to reproductive and LGBTQ freedoms was evident in every word spoken by the diverse group of speakers.

2024 Democratic National Convention’s theme on its third day was “A Struggle for Our Liberties,” and a series of quick-succession speakers kicked off, emphasizing reproductive rights and LGBTQ issues. They subsequently linked the Republican Party and Donald Trump to the pervasive Project 2025, with the initial group of speakers, predominantly women, addressing these topics that have gained significant importance within the party.

On a Wednesday, Jessica Mackler, President of Emily’s List, introduced the topic of Project 2025, linking it immediately to the issue of reproductive healthcare rights. In the term of President Joe Biden, yet stemming from the decisions of three Supreme Court justices appointed by former President Donald Trump, the constitutional protection for abortion care was revoked in the year 2022.

“Project 2025 aims to outlaw abortions across all 50 states, as Mackler explained to the audience at the United Center. This initiative would grant individuals like Donald Trump and J.D. Vance the authority to oversee pregnancies and potentially prosecute physicians for administering abortion medication. It’s crucial to understand that Project 2025 is a genuine concern, but so is our capacity to prevent it.”

In the evening, several speakers quickly made their way to the stage, delivering brief speeches about topics significant to the Democratic Party, followed by praises for Kamala Harris and receiving applause from the audience. On this particular day, Maria Teresa Kumar (CEO of Boca Latino), Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz who was originally scheduled earlier in the week, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, and other notable figures from minor parties took their turn to speak.

As I stood amidst the throng of supporters, I, a fervent admirer, found myself inspired by Kelly Robertson, the esteemed leader of the Human Rights Campaign and its nonprofit organization. With passion in her voice, she delved further into the fight for LGBTQ rights, vociferously expressing her disapproval towards the Republican Party’s stance on the matter.

“Donald Trump aims to eliminate us. He would abolish our healthcare, demean our relationships, and conceal our narrative,” she declared to the audience. “However, we are not disappearing. We are not retreating. Kamala Harris is a strong advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. Therefore, tonight, we’re standing up for lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and trans rights without reservation. We’re fighting for equality for everyone without exception. We’re fighting for joy.”

As night fell, I found myself inspired by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, who continued the conversation on gay rights during her speech. She passionately highlighted Kamala Harris’ impressive tenure as Attorney General of California, a role she held from 2011 to 2017.

“She takes responsibility for penalizing those who pollute the environment and abuse others, but what truly makes her notable is when she champions her constituents’ liberties,” Nessel stated. In 2011, she declined to support California’s prohibition on same-sex marriage, choosing not to advocate for some families being entitled to fewer rights than other families.”

She later added with excitement from the audience, “Oh, by the way, I’ll never let go of my wedding ring, not even in death, Supreme Court.”

A challenging situation arose when Jon Polin and Rachel Goldberg-Polin, the parents of 23-year-old American-Israeli Hersh Goldberg-Polin, took to the stage. Hersh was a Hamas hostage who lost an arm due to a grenade explosion on the day he was captured during the Re’im music festival massacre in Southern Israel on October 7th. As Israel’s military campaign in Gaza was a major topic of contention at protests near the DNC, their speech, being delivered by two of the most vocal family members advocating for the release of hostages, could have been met with resistance from the audience. However, fortunately, the arena fell quiet as they shared his story.

“Jon stated, drawing attention to the devastating casualties in Gaza versus those in Israel, ‘In any contest of hardship, there are no victors.’ He emphasized the urgent need for an end to the suffering of innocent civilians in Gaza, as well as the immediate release of all captives and a one-sided truce.”

Rather than facing jeers and disapproval, the parents were met with a prolonged standing ovation as they approached the podium. The audience echoed with cries of “Bring them home,” causing Rachel to collapse in tears.
