AI Reveals What Harry Potter Characters Should Look Like Based On The Books

As a gamer who grew up with Harry Potter, I can confidently say that the magic of the series transcended from the pages of J.K. Rowling’s books to the silver screen, and I’m grateful for that. However, when it comes to the resemblance between the actors and their book counterparts, let’s just say the AI-generated characters might give us a run for our money!

When the “Harry Potter” books were initially published in 1997, their popularity was so immense that it was only a matter of time before a movie version followed. Indeed, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” (later renamed “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” for American audiences) premiered in cinemas in 2001, introducing global moviegoers to the enchanting world of the novels. The film adaptation brought the tale of the protagonist Harry Potter (played by Daniel Radcliffe) to vibrant life, making the magical universe feel tangible. Fans were intrigued as to whether they would find the ensemble of young actors alongside esteemed British performers to be a fitting portrayal of their beloved characters – and the response was overwhelmingly positive.

Despite the passage of time, fans of “Harry Potter” continue to discuss whether the film’s actors, like Radcliffe, resemble their book counterparts. Last November, YouTuber Suraj Kukkipady compiled a video, modeled after a BoredPanda article, that showcased the movie franchise’s cast members alongside AI-generated depictions of how they should appear based on the original text. Although adaptations often lead to changes, an actor’s talent can sometimes outweigh their physical resemblance to the character as described in the books. However, it’s intriguing to compare the AI representations of the characters with the actors and observe how closely they match – or in some instances, how dissimilar they appear.

How well do these AI imaginings match up against the actors from the Harry Potter movies?

In many instances, AI-generated images and actors align quite well, such as Clémence Poésy portraying Fleur Delacour in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”. However, this isn’t typically the case overall. This is understandable though, considering that the casting for the “Harry Potter” series was a massive endeavor, especially since the main characters, Harry, Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint), and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), are only 11 when the story starts. As a result, the producers needed to find young, often inexperienced actors who would mature alongside the series as it progressed.

Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson excelled in their respective roles throughout all eight movies, with the last one, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” being famously divided into two parts. They were accompanied by a host of talented British actors such as Dame Maggie Smith, Sir Michael Gambon, Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham Carter, Jason Isaacs, Fiona Shaw, Dame Emma Thompson, and numerous others. To be honest, these on-screen portrayals may not perfectly align with their literary counterparts, but that’s inconsequential; the roles were brilliantly brought to life by seasoned actors and a group of newcomers who rose to fame and became some of the most prominent young stars in the film industry.

Soon, a new generation of young actors will star in a Harry Potter series

Regardless, the videos showcasing AI-generated characters alongside their human counterparts may become irrelevant soon due to an upcoming “Harry Potter” reboot on HBO. The announcement in April 2023 revealed a series with enough seasons for each book to have its own episode, which seems promising initially. Many intricate plot points and characters were omitted from the original films based on the books, so it would be satisfying to explore these stories in greater depth.

To be honest, there have been some tricky matters arising since the last Harry Potter movie in 2011. J.K. Rowling, the author, has found herself in a storm of controversy due to certain opinions she’s expressed about transgender women. Some original cast members like Daniel Radcliffe have even spoken out against her views. Moreover, there are parts of the storyline involving house-elves and their so-called love for their servitude that might need reconsideration. With Mark Mylod, a talented director from “Succession,” joining the creative team, I’m hopeful they’ll carefully select actors who truly embody these characters.

The original “Harry Potter” films are streaming on Peacock now.
