As a lifelong movie enthusiast and one who has witnessed the evolution of cinema from the golden age of Hollywood to the streaming era, I must say that I am consistently intrigued by the adaptations of classic novels for the modern screen. The latest adaptation of Oscar Wilde‘s “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” titled “The Grays,” is yet another example of this trend, and I find myself eagerly awaiting its release on Netflix.
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde is highly regarded as one of the best classic novels of all time. The acclaim for the novel has resulted in numerous adaptations, with another one now in the works courtesy of Netflix. The latest adaptation will be titled The Grays and, according to Deadline, will tell “a contemporary take” on the Oscar Wilde classic, revolving around siblings Basil and Dorian Gray himself. Much like the source material and the various adaptations that have followed, the series will once again explore the obsession with eternal youth and beauty, but this time in a modern world.
In 1891, Oscar Wilde penned a highly regarded novel that remains his sole literary work. This captivating tale centers on the portrait of Dorian Gray, which was painted by Basil, a character within the story who is fixated on Dorian’s beauty. Convinced that beauty is the ultimate pursuit in life, Dorian then makes a deal with the devil to maintain his youthful appearance and have the painting age instead, showcasing his sins over time. As he becomes increasingly consumed by his own delusion, Dorian rids himself of anyone who threatens to reveal his secret or interfere with his existence.
As a longtime fan of compelling television storytelling, I am thrilled to hear that the upcoming series is being produced by siblings Katie Rose Rogers and Robbie Rogers for Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Given their past success with the Emmy-nominated series “Fellow Travelers,” I have high hopes for this new project. Rina Mimoun serving as showrunner, along with executive producers Lee Toland Krieger, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman, adds even more credibility to the production. With such a talented team behind it, I can’t wait to see what they bring to life on our screens. Their collective experience and passion for storytelling will undoubtedly result in an unforgettable series that captivates audiences worldwide.
Mimoun has recently concluded his role as executive producer and head writer for Berlanti Productions’ TV series “The Girls On The Bus”. Krieger, on the other hand, has a rich background as both an executive producer and director, having worked on popular Netflix shows like “You”, “Dead Boy Detectives”, and “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”. He also contributed to CW’s “Superman & Lois” and the upcoming “Brilliant Minds” for NBC. In collaboration with Netflix, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. are jointly working on a high-profile project, “Scooby-Doo! The Live-Action Series”, which was initially announced in April and is scheduled for release in 2025.
The Continuing Appeal of Book to Screen Adaptations
Over the years, “The Picture of Dorian Gray” has undergone several transformations for both television and cinema, with notable film adaptions occurring in 1945 and 2009, as well as a TV series in 2004. The book has sparked much debate and analysis due to its impact on society. Interestingly, this timeless novel is set to receive a contemporary makeover in the upcoming production titled “The Grays“. Likewise, other classic literature pieces have been identified as worthy of fresh film interpretations too.
Translating novels for both large (cinema) and small (television) screens remains a favored method, yielding numerous successes in recent times. One of these successful adaptations is Netflix’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, while Colleen Hoover’s It Ends With Us, featuring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, has also made its mark at the box office, overcoming off-screen challenges.
2021 has seen a wealth of novels being brought to life on screen, including Hulu’s “Shogun”, Paramount+’s “A Gentleman in Moscow”, Peacock’s “Apples Never Fall”, and Max’s film “Turtles All the Way Down”. Some notable upcoming adaptations include Netflix’s series “The Perfect Couple” launching on September 6, and the stage-to-screen transition of “Wicked”, which is scheduled for a theatrical release on November 22.
