Salman Khan wishes to remake Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra-led Sholay; says he can play both Jai, Veeru and even Gabbar

As a seasoned lifestyle expert with a keen eye for cinema and its impact on our cultural landscape, I must say that Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar’s docu-series, Angry Young Men, is not just a fascinating glimpse into Bollywood’s golden era but also an insightful journey through the lives of two legends. The roundtable conversation hosted by Farah Khan was particularly enlightening, offering unique perspectives on iconic films and the actors who brought them to life.

I’m absolutely thrilled about the latest release on my favorite streaming platform – the docu-series “Angry Young Men,” created by none other than the legendary duo, Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. And here’s something that’s got me even more excited! As part of their promotional efforts, they recently shared a video featuring Bollywood superstar, Salman Khan. In it, he talked about his dream projects – iconic films penned by the legendary writers that he’d love to reimagine if given the chance. What an amazing teaser for what’s to come in this fascinating series!

More recently, Amazon Prime Video shared a promotional video on YouTube featuring a discussion between Salim Khan, Javed Akhtar, their children Salman Khan, Zoya Akhtar, Farhan Akhtar, and series director Namrata Rao. This chat was led by filmmaker Farah Khan in a gathering setting.

In their discussion, they exchanged intriguing details about the golden age. During a question-and-answer segment, when the director of Om Shanti Om inquired Salman Khan to pick a film by Salim-Javed that he’d like to rework, the performer openly shared his aspiration to remake the classic films Sholay and Deewaar, with Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra in their original roles.

Farah inquired if he would disclose the part he intended to perform. In answer, everyone seated at the table – Zoya Akhtar, Namrata Rao, and others concurred, saying, “He is Veeru.” Javed consented with this. However, Salman jokingly added, “I can play both roles, Veeru and Jai, and even Gabbar.”

Initially, he mentioned that he would portray the character of Veeru, later on, he consented to act as Jai as well. Additionally, he expressed his readiness to take on the role of Gabbar Singh too. He declared, “I am capable of playing either one.”

In response to Salman’s query, Salim-Javed shared an engaging story about the character of Gabbar Singh from Sholay. They mentioned that several actors expressed interest in portraying this role initially, including Sanjeev Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan. However, it was eventually Amjad Khan who took on the part. Javed further disclosed that Dharmendra was content with his role as Veeru.

Back in 2007, I had the chance to recreate a timeless classic called Sholay, which I titled Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag. Similarly, Deewaar was reimagined as Thee by Rajinikanth, and Aatish, starring Sanjay Dutt, draws some inspiration from the same movie.

The Angry Young Men documentary series narrates the remarkable career trajectory of Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar within the Indian film industry, better known as Bollywood. Numerous stars like Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Farhan Akhtar, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Zoya Akhtar, and others share their personal accounts of collaborating with these influential writers and discuss the profound impact their films had on them.

The series is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
