Stree 2: Rajkummar Rao recalls improvising first part's iconic climax scene with a Shah Rukh Khan touch; 'In theaters, people were going nuts'

As a long-time admirer of Indian cinema, particularly Rajkummar Rao’s captivating performances, I find myself thoroughly enthralled by his recent revelation about improvising the iconic climax scene from Stree. His ability to seamlessly incorporate Shah Rukh Khan’s expressions into his own acting repertoire is a testament to his talent and dedication to the craft.

In the 2018 movie Stree, remember when Rajkummar Rao (as Vicky) was asked to stare into a witch’s eyes? The amusing ending scene had a link to Shah Rukh Khan, as the actor in the original film mimicked SRK while gazing back. It turns out that Rajkummar Rao drew inspiration from SRK’s expressions to create the memorable sequence in Stree himself.

In his recent YouTube chat with Raj Shamani, Rajkummar Rao explained that when he collaborates with writers, he requests them to create a “play space” for him. Using the memorable finale scene from Stree as an example, Rao described how this “play space” was represented by Stree standing before him. Despite his character’s fear of the witch’s presence, he was instructed to gaze into her eyes with affection.

Rajkummar Rao, an ardent admirer of Shah Rukh Khan, added that when people in our country consider love, they often recall King Khan. Rao mentioned that he “spontaneously” incorporated the iconic expressions of SRK during the scene. The actor from Stree 2 revealed that his character, Vicky, is a small-town fellow who was raised watching movies.

At that spot, I came up with something on the spot (improvised), and it had everyone in stitches. The audience went wild over that particular scene during the performance. Rao commented, referring to it as an improvised segment.

Regarding Amar Kaushik, Rajkummar Rao commended his approach by stating that as a director, he allows actors room to explore and try new things on set even if they deviate from the script’s original intentions. Furthermore, Rao mentioned that Kaushik is always ready to discuss any issues that may arise when a scene goes awry.

In a recent interview during the promotion of Stree 2, Rajkummar Rao praised Shah Rukh Khan by calling him an embodiment of romance. He further revealed his passion for romantic roles, stating that he identifies as a true romantic at heart and hopes to take on more such roles in future films.

On August 15, 2024, Stree 2, the follow-up to Stree, will debut in cinemas. However, upon its release, it found itself competing with Khel Khel Mein and Vedaa at the box office.
