As a movie enthusiast who has seen the evolution of superhero films over the years, I can wholeheartedly say that Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man is nothing short of iconic. His transformation from a troubled actor to a beloved superhero is truly inspiring and serves as a testament to the power of redemption.

In a significant turn of events, Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Tony Stark in Iron Man under Jon Favreau’s direction marked a crucial milestone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, it was another Marvel actor who played a pivotal role in securing Downey Jr.’s role initially. It’s challenging to envision anyone else embodying Tony Stark as deeply as Downey Jr., given that he has portrayed this character nine times across various films. His performance is so distinctive that contemporary Iron Man comic books often draw inspiration from Robert Downey Jr.’s interpretation of Tony Stark. The friendship between Iron Man and Peter Parker (Tom Holland) in Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming is a memorable on-screen dynamic, but it’s owing to another Spider-Man actor that Downey Jr. even became Iron Man initially.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Robert Downey Jr. shared that Tobey Maguire was the one who motivated him to pursue the part of Tony Stark. Maguire is famous for playing Peter Parker in Sam Raimi’s cherished Spider-Man trilogy from 2002 to 2007. Maguire and Downey Jr. had previously acted together in Tropic Thunder and Wonder Boys. After dealing with substance abuse problems for many years, Downey Jr. managed to turn his life around. Watching Maguire as Spider-Man ignited in him the desire to land a superhero role. He explained this by saying that after seeing Maguire play Spider-Man, he felt compelled to pursue a similar role.

“Over time, I witnessed the challenges they faced, the satisfaction they brought, and the surge in their popularity – comic book films. Having stayed sober for quite some time and feeling hunger for more, I couldn’t help but feel the allure of self-improvement returning. Strangely enough, I had been rigorously working out six days a week before this role presented itself, my therapist advising me to act as if something extraordinary was on its way and prepare accordingly.”

After over a decade portraying Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), fans presumed that Downey Jr. had finished with the series following his self-sacrifice at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Yet, during San Diego Comic-Con this year, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige astonished everyone by revealing that Robert Downey Jr. will reappear in the MCU, taking on the role of Victor Von Doom, also known as the infamous Fantastic Four adversary Dr. Doom.

At present, viewers are uncertain about how Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of a new character will unfold on screen. Given that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has immersed itself deeply into multiverse and time-travel narratives, it seems plausible that Downey Jr. might embody Victor Von Doom from an alternate reality. Nonetheless, we’ll need to be patient until 2026 when Avengers: Doomsday, directed by the Russo Brothers, hits the screens to witness how they manage this transformation.

In the course of the podcast, Downey Jr. explained the reasons behind his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after a five-year hiatus, which had led some to believe he was finished with the role. The actor reminisced about a chat he had with his wife (Susan Downey) and Kevin Feige. He mentioned that they discussed his comeback.

As a devoted cinephile, I found myself in conversation with Feige at some point, and he mused, “You know, if you were to return…” Susan interjected, “Hold on, hold on, who are we bringing back as?” And then it dawned on us both that this was yet another instance of his genius. He’s not just a creative thinker; he’s a mastermind pondering questions like, ‘How can we avoid regression? How can we defy expectations? How can we surpass them?’ His suggestion was Victor von Doom, and upon further exploration, I was astounded. Later on, he emphasized, “We need to get Victor von Doom right. We need to make it work.” So, I turned to Kevin and asked, “May I discuss this with Bob Iger?” To which he replied, “Of course, about everything.”

The movie titled Avengers: Doomsday will hit the big screens on May 1, 2026. Meanwhile, you can catch up with Iron Man on Disney+.
