As a die-hard Late Show fan with a soft spot for Stephen Colbert‘s witty humor, I was thrilled to see him live from Chicago following the Democratic National Convention. His monologue was a perfect blend of sarcasm and insight, making me laugh out loud while also keeping me engaged.
During his opening remarks for last Thursday’s live broadcast following the DNC, Stephen Colbert addressed two popular subjects that had arisen throughout the evening: the unsubstantiated gossip about Beyoncé taking the stage, and Vice President Kamala Harris’ powerful speech.
Live from the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, after the conclusion of the Democratic National Convention’s final events, Colbert played a video of North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper introducing himself as “the one who stands as the barrier before you and the long-awaited moment.”
Colbert inquired, “Is that Beyoncé?” to which the response was negative. He clarified, “I’m just asking, I’m just asking! Even though the DNC stated she wouldn’t be attending, TMZ claimed she would.” The publication had reported that the singer, who had allowed Harris to use her song “Freedom” during her presidential campaign, was expected to make a special appearance on the final day of the DNC. However, this turned out to be untrue; instead, the convention concluded with a speech from Harris and there was no sighting of Beyoncé. A representative for Beyoncé later informed The Hollywood Reporter that she had never been scheduled to attend.

Colbert playfully imitated the kiss and quipped, “I’m sorry there wasn’t a present for you tonight, Doug. However, if you hold on for a few months, she could possibly buy you a brand-new home instead.”
When Harris called her fellow candidate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, “Coach”, Donald Trump expressed his thoughts on his personal platform, Truth Social, stating that “Walz was actually an assistant coach, not a head coach,” as he put it.
“Wow, wow!” said Colbert, surprised. “Surely, he’s just an assistant coach. That implies Walz is only fit for a position like a vice presidency, if you consider it logically,” Colbert joked, which drew loud cheers from the crowd.
During a discussion on Trump, Harris stated that he is “not a genuine person.” In response, Colbert playfully mimicked Trump by asserting, “No, Kamala, I’m quite sincere. Just inquire from my dear friend, the late and legendary Hannibal Lecter.”
Harris, in her speech, additionally encouraged the crowd to comprehend that Trump could continue with his plans if re-elected as president for a second term. However, Colbert countered by saying, “Madame Vice President, I respectfully disagree, because after such an intense roasting, I believe he’s overcooked.”
Colbert expressed even greater admiration for Harris’ speech, remarking that it was “exactly what we were eagerly anticipating throughout the entire week.”
Colbert stated, “She criticized her adversary for his policy flaws, neglect of duty, falsehoods, treason, and criminal acts – all of them. She serves as a prosecutor in the case of Donald J. Trump. He stands accused and now it’s time for him to serve a 4 to 8-year term as President Harris.”
