As a movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt and a keen interest in all things Marvel, I must say that the return of James Spader as Ultron in the upcoming Disney+ series is nothing short of electrifying!
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, James Spader will reprise his role as the menacing villain, Ultron, in an upcoming Disney+ series centered around Vision. Previously, Spader brought Ultron to life in the 2015 film “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” where Paul Bettany first appeared as the Vision character. Although it seemed like Ultron met his end at the hands of Vision, the fact that the movie ended with Vision’s lethal blast being cut off has left fans questioning whether Ultron truly perished and eager for his potential comeback.
Approximately ten years after his initial appearance, it’s been confirmed that actor James Spader will reprise his role as Ultron. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Spader is set to join the cast for the yet-to-be-titled Vision series, previously known as Vision Quest. Star Trek: Picard showrunner Terry Matalas is overseeing the Vision series, which focuses on the White Vision created in WandaVision as he seeks his life’s purpose. This series marks the third installment in a trilogy of stories that began with WandaVision and will be followed by Agatha All Along. Notably, Spader will provide voice-overs for Ultron, unlike his motion capture work in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Rage of Ultron
Ultron, initially introduced by writer Roy Thomas and artist John Buscema within the pages of The Avengers #54 in July 1968, was originally conceived as a creation of Ant-Man hero Hank Pym in the comics. However, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Ultron’s origins were reimagined to be Tony Stark’s creation instead. In the movie Age of Ultron, Tony built a body for himself with the intention of evolving before the Avengers seized it and uploaded JARVIS into it, resulting in the birth of the new hero, Vision. Although Ultron was vanquished, his influence on the MCU was profound, culminating in the destruction of Sokovia, which led to the enactment of the Sokovia Accords, causing a rift among the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War, and leaving them divided during their battle against Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Throughout the MCU, Vision’s connections to both his origin story and Scarlet Witch have been significant.
Spader’s return as Ultron is a big deal for many. Alternate reality versions of Ultron have been seen in the animated series What If…? and the 2022 film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but they were voiced by Ross Marquand. Since Marquand took over as Red Skull from Hugo Weaving after the actor expressed his displeasure about working on the first Captain America film, many fans assumed the same had happened with Spader. Yet Spader’s return is an exciting one for fans.
In terms of his character’s development within the series, there are numerous possibilities. For instance, it could be unveiled that Vision did not actually destroy Ultron but rather hid its head somewhere. This plot twist would necessitate using a puppet for the Ultron drone head, as this prop doesn’t possess the intricate facial expressions of the CGI version, making Tom Spader’s voice acting more prominent. Since Ultron’s programming was integrated into Vision, it could be that Vision is tormented by his creator’s voice within him. Considering Ultron is one of Marvel’s most formidable villains, we eagerly anticipate seeing him resurface in some capacity.
