Why Joan Vassos Was Chosen As The Golden Bachelorette And Who Else From Gerry Turner’s Season Was Considered

As a long-time fan of The Golden Bachelor franchise, I must say that I was initially taken aback by ABC’s decision to cast Joan Vassos as The Golden Bachelorette. However, upon reflection, I wholeheartedly agree with their choice. Joan’s early exit due to her daughter’s health concerns resonated with me on a personal level, and it’s refreshing to see a contestant who prioritizes family values.

As a devoted member of Bachelor Nation, I couldn’t help but anticipate who would take over as the Golden Bachelorette when Gerry Turner popped the question to Theresa Nist on the final episode of The Golden Bachelor’s inaugural season. Naturally, many speculated that Leslie Fhima, the runner-up, would be the obvious pick for the spinoff. However, it was quite unexpected when ABC selected Joan Vassos instead. Now, the show’s executive producers have shared their insights on why they chose Joan and which other contestants they wished could have filled the role.

Typically, ABC selects its next Bachelor or Bachelorette from the pool of past contestants, and these individuals are usually among the finalists of a particular season. However, Joan Vassos departed Gerry Turner’s season early due to health issues concerning her daughter. This early exit might have influenced the decision to cast her in the spinoff, as suggested by Executive Producer Claire Freeland to Entertainment Weekly.

We talked about a lot of different people. But Joan’s journey was cut short by something that is very relatable. Joan is a caregiver and that’s why she left her journey last season. She still has a sincere desire to find her next great love. I don’t feel like people got to see enough of her, so I’m thrilled that she’s back.

It was a bummer when Joan Vassos departed from “The Golden Bachelor.” She and Gerry Turner had enjoyed an exceptional one-on-one date, culminating in her receiving a rose. However, his spirits sank when she disclosed that she had to move on. If she’d stayed, there’s a chance she would have been among the last contestants standing. Although we can only speculate, it works out well for us as we eagerly await her appearance on ABC’s fall lineup as “The Golden Bachelorette.”

Joan Vassos wasn’t the sole candidate for the franchise, as many Americans also admired a significant portion of Gerry Turner’s cast. In fact, Executive Producer Bennett Graebner regretted that there weren’t more opportunities for the exceptional female talents who deserved their own spin-off series. He expressed this sentiment by saying:

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but express my enthusiasm for witnessing a season featuring Ellen, not to mention Susan [Noles], Leslie, and Faith too! Each of these personalities would undoubtedly bring something unique to the table, ensuring a diverse and engaging season. Frankly, it feels like an abundance of exciting possibilities!

What a shame it was to see Ellen Goltzer leave “The Golden Bachelor” so soon! The outcry on social media was swift, urging her to become the first “Golden Bachelorette.” Leslie Fhima and Faith Martin appeared to be strong contenders, as they reached the final three. We can’t forget Susan Noles, who gained attention from Kardashians matriarch Kris Jenner and even officiated Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist’s impassioned live wedding.

Additionally, there are several other candidates I’d nominate such as Natascha Hardee, the outspoken Kathy “Keep quiet” Swarts, Sandra Mason, and April Kirkwood.

However, I do love Claire Freeland’s reasoning, and despite some of us feeling burned by the Golden franchise after Gerry and Theresa’s quick divorce, I can’t wait to watch Joan Vassos’ journey. Tune into the premiere at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday, September 18, on ABC with episodes available to stream the next day with a Hulu subscription.
