Amanda Ba Builds Flesh and Fantasy in ‘Developing Desire’

Amanda Ba Builds Flesh and Fantasy in 'Developing Desire'

As a lover of contemporary art with a penchant for exploring diverse cultural narratives, I am absolutely thrilled about Amanda Ba’s upcoming solo exhibition at Jeffrey Deitch Gallery! Born to first-generation Chinese-American parents and raised in Ohio, her work resonates deeply with my own experiences straddling multiple cultures.

During the excitement leading up to the Armory Show, Amanda Ba’s solo exhibition will debut at the Jeffrey Deitch Gallery in New York City from September 7 to October 26, 2024. Born in Ohio to Chinese-American parents who were first-generation immigrants, Ba’s artwork translates personal memories and concepts of ancestry into otherworldly charm. Her work evokes a sense of nostalgia and imagination simultaneously.

In Ba’s latest artwork, titled “Developing Desire“, he brings together a group of voluptuous, deity-like figures amidst urban Chinese backdrops. The vicinity of debris suggests the drives of creation, demolition, and renovation; these nude bodies, adorned with knee pads and weary countenances, seem to embody these processes. This artwork explores themes of desire, patriotism, and democracy, giving tangible form to psychosexual fantasies.

In some other significant pieces, Ba leads tourists through places from her childhood, imbuing them with a nostalgic shimmer. In “More Future Triptych”, the artist ponders over the initial five years of her childhood spent in Hefei, Anhui Province. This three-channel video weaves together genuine and enacted moments of everyday life in public to contemplate China’s history, fixations, and aspirations as they are reflected on the surface of daily existence.

This forthcoming exhibition aims to shed fresh perspective on China by exploring themes ranging from digital heart-shaped filters reminiscent of post-internet culture, to calligraphy inspired by Dazibao. Through a keen sense of curiosity and an inquisitive gaze, artist Ba delves into the cultural psyche of China as it emerges, both documenting and challenging its surface.

Developing Desire will be on view in New York from September 7 through October 26, 2024.
