I'm Not Surprised Anthony Mackie Threw Another Jab At Tom Holland Over Captain America: Brave New World Footage, But It's Still Funny

As a longtime Marvel enthusiast and avid follower of the behind-the-scenes shenanigans, I must admit that the ongoing banter between Anthony Mackie and Tom Holland has become one of my favorite aspects of being a fan. Their playful rivalry, stemming from their first collaboration in Captain America: Civil War, has evolved into a delightful tradition that adds an extra layer of excitement to each new Marvel project they’re involved in.

Since their collaboration in “Captain America: Civil War” back in 2017, Anthony Mackie and Tom Holland have maintained a playful “rivalry.” Just recently, Mackie made fun of Holland’s height, and now, he’s at it again. With the release of “Captain America: Brave New World” scheduled for 2025, Mackie, who plays Sam Wilson, couldn’t resist another jab at Holland, who portrays Spider-Man. This isn’t unexpected from him, but it always manages to bring a smile.

Last month at San Diego Comic-Con, a little over a month after the first Brave New World trailer dropped, new footage of the fourth Captain America movie was exclusively shown to attendees at Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel. Taking to his Instagram page, Mackie shared a photo of himself next to someone looking up at a shot of Sam Wilson displayed on the massive screen that night, and here’s what he wrote in the caption:

After some reflection, the magnitude of the situation hit me hard – it’s a whole new ball game taking my own movie to the screen. As Tom Holland so accurately pointed out in 2013, there’s nothing quite like stepping up to the controller and playing your own level, my friend!

It seems like he just couldn’t resist taking a jab at Anthony Mackie, didn’t he? You might recall that in 2018, Mackie admitted to not having seen Spider-Man: Homecoming during an ACE Comic Con panel, despite it being released the year before. Holland, who was playing Spider-Man at the time, quipped back, “At least I have a movie to ignore,” in response to Mackie’s lack of involvement in a leading role in the Marvel movies up until then.

But now we live in a different era; after receiving the Captain America shield from the elderly Steve Rogers at the end of Avengers: Endgame, and then going through the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (which can be streamed with a Disney+ subscription), Sam has officially become the new Captain America and is ready to take center stage. So can you really blame Anthony Mackie for using the Brave New World Hall H footage as an excuse to once again make fun of Tom Holland? I would have been disappointed in him if he hadn’t! Your move, Tom.

Still, Mackie has a long way to go until he’s on Holland’s level when it comes to the solo movies, as the latter has three under his belt, and Spider-Man 4 remains in development. Make no mistake, though, there’s a lot of other big things to look forward to from Captain America: Brave New World, including the return of Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Sterns, who’s now The Leader; Harrison Ford taking over the role of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who will become Red Hulk; and the debut of Giancarlo Esposito as Sidewinder. Julius Onah directed the feature, and Malcolm Spellman, Dallas Musson and Mathew Orton all worked on the script.

Captain America’s latest adventure titled “Brave New World” is set to hit theaters on Valentine’s Day 2025. On the other hand, both Spider-Man movies, “Homecoming” and “Far From Home”, can be streamed on Disney+, but you need a Star subscription to watch “Spider-Man: No Way Home”.
