Ahead Of Community's Movie, Joel McHale Just Joined One Of My Other Favorite TV Shows

As a long-time fan who’s seen more episodes of “Community” than I can count on my fingers and toes combined, I’m absolutely thrilled to see Joel McHale joining the cast of Showtime’s “Yellowjackets”! While Jeff Winger will always hold a special place in my heart, I’m eager to witness McHale bring his unique charm to this dark and chilling series.

Since its NBC days, “Community” has been a cherished TV show for me and is undeniably among the greatest sitcoms ever made. I’m thrilled about Joel McHale reprising his role as Jeff Winger in Peacock’s upcoming “Community” movie. But now, here’s something that excites me even more – Joel McHale has signed up for one of my all-time favorite shows currently being produced! Yay for exciting news like this!

McHale has been announced as the latest cast addition to Showtime’s acclaimed horror series Yellowjackets during Season 3. Interestingly, McHale is better known for comedic roles over dramatic ones, which could bring a fresh, humorous twist to the show, given its underlying layer of dark comedy that permeates through both timeframes, particularly for the adult characters. (I’m excited about Elijah Wood reprising his role as Walter Tattersall again.)

Take a look at the Yellowjackets’ social media update, which shared the news (although humorously, they used a cheesy photo of the actor rather than clips from the episode).

In this universe, it’s quite challenging to predict who Joel McHale might be portraying. However, it seems reasonable to assume he’ll be involved in the present-day narrative. As for the struggling teens, they probably won’t encounter any new characters in the woods, but there’s always a slim chance, given that Season 2 ended with them being left without shelter and uncertain about their connection to the flash-forwards featuring the enigmatic Antler Queen.

Could this individual emerge as a potential threat from positions of authority like law enforcement or government officials scrutinizing the survivors’ lives? Or perhaps an enigmatic figure from their past who possesses unknown information? Might he also have ties to the woods and the body discovered in the cabin? Could all these possibilities be valid? Not exactly, but it’s intriguing to speculate.

The open announcement of the casting seems to hint at a more substantial part than just a brief appearance. However, given that Joel McHale is currently hosting “Crime Scene Kitchen,” starring in “Animal Control,” frequently appearing on game shows and has other film projects ongoing, it’s unlikely he will have a major role. Yet, there’s still a chance it might be something more.

Among the upcoming horror TV shows I’m excited for, Yellowjackets definitely ranks high and might even be nipping at the heels of the one that currently holds the top spot (thanks to its cannibalism theme!). Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that Season 3 will debut in 2024, which is disappointing. However, I’m genuinely optimistic that the special episode Showtime has hinted at might air around Halloween instead.

Regarding the timeline for the “Community” movie, Dan Harmon recently mentioned that the script is undergoing its final revisions before further action is taken. Additionally, he voiced concern over fans bothering Donald Glover about his potential return. Perhaps McHale could persuade Glover to join “Yellowjackets,” or even Alison Brie, who seems a good fit for a scream queen role!

The third season of “Yellowjackets” is currently in the midst of filming, and we don’t have an exact release date just yet. However, you can catch up on the first two seasons by subscribing to Paramount+ for streaming access.
