‘Chimp Crazy’ on Pace for Multi-Year Viewer Highs for HBO Doc Series

As a longtime HBO enthusiast with a vast collection of DVDs and countless hours spent binge-watching their content, I must say that the current success of “Chimp Crazy” and “Industry” has truly rekindled my excitement for the network. The numbers speak for themselves – these shows are not just drawing in viewers, they’re captivating them!

It appears that HBO’s “Chimp Crazy” could potentially become their most-watched documentary series in quite some time.

The Eric Goode-directed show isn’t attracting viewership comparable to that of “The Last of Us” or even “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” However, “Chimp Crazy” is on track to become HBO’s most popular documentary series since “McMillions,” which aired in early 2020. Moreover, the show that precedes “Chimp Crazy,” titled “Industry,” has achieved its highest ratings yet during the early stages of its third season.

The second installment of “Chimp Crazy” on August 25 attracted 350,000 initial viewers on HBO and Max. Interestingly, the first episode has since amassed a total of 2.3 million viewers across all platforms within a week, suggesting it could surpass any HBO documentary series in the past four-plus years in terms of viewership. To put this into perspective, the premiere of “Chimp Crazy” is currently outperforming another notable docuseries on the channel: The first episode of “The Jinx Part 2” garnered 2 million viewers over the same timeframe.

Regarding the television series ‘Industry’, the third episode of its third season on Sunday attracted 370,000 cross-platform viewers in one night – a record high for the drama, although it’s still relatively small compared to HBO’s total viewership. What makes this notable is that most shows tend to decline in popularity after three seasons, but ‘Industry’ is actually growing. Since its season premiere on Aug. 11, the series has amassed a total of 1.4 million viewers, which is 500,000 more than the viewership for the opening episode of season two over the same time period.
