EXCLUSIVE: Charlie Vickers, Charles Edwards Talk Challenges Of Filming The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power S2; 'You Trip A Lot'

As a devoted fan of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, I find myself utterly captivated by the behind-the-scenes struggles that Charlie Vickers and Charles Edwards endured to bring their characters, Sauron and Celebrimbor, to life. Their tales of navigating long robes, tripping hazards, and blurred vision due to contact lenses have added a new dimension to my admiration for these talented actors.

As a connoisseur of all things entertainment, I had the privilege to sit down with Charlie Vickers and Charles Edwards for an enlightening chat about their experiences during the production of Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. These talented gentlemen shared insights into the extraordinary hurdles they faced while bringing Middle-earth back to life on screen.

Worldwide viewers remain enthralled by the widely acclaimed Amazon Prime Video show, which takes place in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. As the performers themselves acknowledge, the costume aspect of production presented unique hurdles.

When inquired about the toughest hurdle encountered during filming, Charlie Vickers, portraying the ominous character Sauron, promptly highlighted that there were numerous obstacles. “There are not just one, but multiple challenges I faced,” Vickers explained. In other words, he mentioned that there were constant physical demands on set.

One of the more difficult aspects was needing to don those lengthy gowns. “For me, at least, wearing extended garments proved tricky,” he admitted.

Charles Edwards, portraying Celebrimbor, the Elven blacksmith, commented, “Indeed, we faced similar problems with our long gowns.” These garments not only restricted our movements but also posed a risk of causing falls. Vickers chimed in, “You often stumble over those robes.”

As a devoted admirer of their craft, I’ve come to realize that descending staircases poses a unique challenge for them. Edwards, ever so eloquently put it, “Navigating downstairs is tricky because elves don’t look down, they just carry on going straight down.”

In addition to managing their costumes, portraying elves presented the actors with physical hurdles. As Vickers explained, “Elves can’t look down physically.” Edwards humorously added, “They seem to have a mechanism in their necks preventing their heads from doing so.”

Vickers mentioned that he wore contact lenses, which often made things appear hazy for him, similar to how an alien’s view might be. However, this blurred vision sometimes caused him to stumble around on set as well.

“The tool turned out to be really useful as it gave me the sensation of being a deity. Unfortunately, my vision became indistinct, which made me think I had an otherworldly feeling. However, this blurriness caused me to stumble quite frequently.”

In the series The Rings of Power, both Charlie Vickers and Charles Edwards play significant roles. Vickers portrays the character Sauron, who is a pivotal figure in Tolkien’s mythology, renowned for his skill in deceiving and manipulating others as he pursues power.

In the first season, viewers were taken aback when they discovered that Halbrand, who had accompanied Galadriel, was none other than Sauron in disguise. As the story unfolds in Season 2, it’s anticipated that Sauron will assume a different identity, Annatar, as he continues to carry out his malevolent schemes across Middle-earth.

Instead of Edwards portraying Celebrimbor, a skilled Elven smith who plays a pivotal role in the making of the Rings of Power, we find that his tale is deeply intertwined with Sauron’s. Unfortunately, Celebrimbor aids Sauron unknowingly in creating these rings, which ultimately lead to the corruption and demise of numerous beings.
