Telegram CEO Pavel Durov indicted, placed under judicial supervision in France

As a seasoned crypto investor with a knack for navigating the digital frontier, I must admit, this recent turn of events surrounding Telegram and its visionary CEO Pavel Durov has left me both intrigued and concerned. The allegations against Durov are severe, and if proven true, they could indeed tarnish the reputation of one of the most popular encrypted messaging platforms globally.

On August 28, a Paris court ordered the release of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov under supervision, after his latest detention for accusations that include terrorism-related activities and distributing inappropriate content involving children.

As per recent reports, Durov is facing charges that have led to his being placed under house arrest. He must pay a bail bond of 5 million euros, check-in with the local police station every other week, and is prohibited from traveling outside of French territory.

Following Durov’s detention at Le Bourget airport close to Paris on August 26, and subsequent transfer to a Paris court, the court’s judgment is based on allegations that Durov neglected to control illegal content within his encrypted messaging service, Telegram.

Durov is not allowed to leave France.

Durov’s charges

Billionaire Durov, of both French and Russian descent, has encountered numerous legal issues. French officials have pointed fingers at him for being involved in a series of criminal acts, such as distributing indecent content related to child sexual abuse, committing cybercrimes, and drug dealing. He is said to be under investigation for a total of twelve offenses.

The results of this court case could significantly impact both Durov and Telegram, since the service has faced questions about its involvement in aiding illegal activities.

The apprehension led to a significant drop in Toncoin (TON), a cryptocurrency associated with Telegram, as it dipped by approximately 20%, reaching a price of $5.3. This caused the market capitalization to shrink to around $13.6 billion.

Supporters within the cryptocurrency world have shown great backing towards Telegram’s creator, Pavel Durov, after his detainment in France due to accusations of insufficient monitoring of illegal activities on the network.
