As a seasoned movie critic who’s seen more than my fair share of cinematic flops and successes, I must admit that the 2024 reimagining of The Crow is a story that left me feeling as cold and lifeless as the character it portrays. The tragic legacy of Brandon Lee, whose untimely death during the filming of the original 1994 adaptation, has cast an impenetrable shadow over any attempt to resurrect this Gothic tale of love and vengeance.

2024’s reinvention of “The Crow” could be fully realized if fans of the initial movie decide to rewatch the 1994 Brandon Lee original, which will be available for free streaming on Pluto TV starting in September. The controversies surrounding this year’s adaptation of the dark love-and-revenge story have made it challenging for Rupert Sanders’ interpretation to gain popularity in theaters, resulting in its box office failure.

1994 saw the release of “The Crow,” a movie that carried an eerie aura following the untimely death of its lead actor, Brandon Lee, who tragically lost his life on set during filming. His death gave the film an almost mythical status, making it nearly impossible for any subsequent films to match its legendary reputation. Yet, several sequels were still produced, each receiving poor reviews and fading into obscurity. As a cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but wonder what could have been if Lee had lived to see the completion of his final performance.

Upon the unveiling of the 2024 reboot – referred to as a “reimagining” – for the franchise, it was quickly hit with a formidable barrier of critical responses that varied from skepticism to fury. Some questioned the necessity of creating another version of The Crow, while others criticized it for tarnishing Lee’s legacy. Not a promising beginning for any film production. Despite landing Bill Skarsgard in the main role, an actor whose career has skyrocketed lately, the challenges facing the movie only multiplied as production wrapped up and footage started appearing online.

The Crow’s 2024 Release Could Not Escape Brandon Lee’s Shadow

Despite Director Sanders and actor Skargard repeatedly stating in numerous interviews that their new movie wasn’t remaking or rebooting the 1994 film, but rather adapting the original comic book by James O’Barr, skeptical fans didn’t seem to believe it. This became quite evident during the movie’s opening weekend. In a week where any fresh release might have stood a chance at taking the number one spot, The Crow performed so poorly that it barely managed to enter the Top 10 with its modest $4.6 million domestic earnings.

In an unexpected twist, critics found themselves repeatedly comparing Sanders’ movie to its earlier version, resulting in harsh criticism that led to the film opening with a 6% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Conversely, audiences, especially those within the “verified” section of the site, were more receptive towards the film, awarding it a 64% approval rating and generally evaluating it based on its individual qualities.

Due to the poor performance at movie theaters, the newest adaptation of The Crow is likely to become available for streaming sooner rather than later. Those who can’t access the 1994 version on Paramount+’s premium service will have a chance to rewatch Brandon Lee’s excellent portrayal in September, as it will be added to Pluto TV at that time.

As of now, there’s no confirmed premiere date for the upcoming film titled “The Crow” in 2024. However, you can still catch it playing on the big screen.
