As Law And Order: SVU Calls Back To 'Legendary' Episode With Serena Williams, Fans Make A Really Good Point About Her Performance

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU) since its inception, I must say that revisiting the Season 5 episode “Brotherhood” was a nostalgic trip down memory lane. The appearance of tennis legend Serena Williams as a basketball player might seem peculiar to some, but it added an intriguing twist to the already engaging plotline.

People who began watching SVU after 2004, or haven’t revisited the early seasons using Peacock Premium or Hulu, might not recognize this specific episode. Recently, the official Instagram page for Law & Order shared a clip of tennis superstar Serena Williams portraying an athlete in Season 5’s episode titled “Brotherhood.” Here’s a sneak peek: “Serena Williams makes a guest appearance as a basketball player in this iconic SVU episode.” Give it a watch:

In no Law & Order series episode would a witness interview be routine if it didn’t involve someone recounting gruesome crimes while going about their daily business alongside detectives! Serena Williams doesn’t play a major part in this specific episode, but most comments left on the post are favorable. However, I found myself hesitating when reading this comment from kwayeara11 in particular.

As a gamer putting it in my own words, I’ve always pondered over the choice not to make that character pick up a tennis racket. Yet, this particular episode from season 5 remains one of my absolute favorites!💥🔥

In response to another comment, I must concur – that jump shot indeed didn’t seem convincing 😂. It got me thinking, couldn’t Serena Williams’ character have been playing tennis instead of basketball? She did a commendable job as the basketball player in the latest episode of SVU, but it’s no secret that the Williams sisters truly shine on the tennis court.

It hadn’t crossed my mind before because “Brotherhood” is quite a dramatic episode of SVU. Benson and Stabler find themselves investigating the murder of a fraternity pledge master, whose past actions against women were so heinous that Serena Williams’ character was fortunate to have an alibi to prove where she was at the time.

In a surprising turn of events, the perpetrator turned out to be a fraternity pledge who had previously assaulted the victim. The trial took several unexpected turns, such as the defense attorney betraying his client to help secure Casey’s conviction and incarcerate a rapist. If the main criticism of an episode is that a real-life tennis champion was portrayed as a basketball player, it shows the quality of the episode. I’m grateful that the franchise’s social media accounts reminded me of this.

To put it simply, during its peak years, particularly when the team consisted of Benson, Stabler, Munch, Fin, and Cragen, SVU really shone. Serena Williams’ appearance was an enjoyable addition, though it was unusual that she played a basketball player instead of her famous tennis character. If you fancy revisiting “Brotherhood” from Season 5, you can stream it on Peacock and Hulu.

Starting this coming Thursday, October 3rd at 9 PM Eastern Time, you’ll be able to watch the newest episodes of Law & Order: SVU Season 26. This will air on NBC, between the original Law & Order show at 8 PM ET and Found at 10 PM ET. Filming for this season started in late July, with Mariska Hargitay and Ice-T returning to reprise their roles.
