9-1-1: Lone Star Boss Opens Up About Why Carlos’ New Job In Season 5 Makes Sense For Him

As a seasoned gamer who’s been following 9-1-1: Lone Star since its debut, I must say that the upcoming fifth season promises to be a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The transformation of Carlos Reyes from a patrol officer to a Texas Ranger seems like an unexpected twist, but upon reflection, it makes perfect sense given his complex relationship with his father and the legacy he left behind.

Preparing for what might be its last season, TV series “9-1-1: Lone Star” is in store for major transformations. Besides the departure of actress Sierra McClain from the cast, it’s also reported that Rafael Silva’s character, Carlos Reyes, will shift careers. In an interview, showrunner Rashad Raisani explains why this career change aligns with Carlos’ character development.

In an exciting sneak peek for the upcoming season airing in 2024, it was revealed that Carlos will no longer serve as a patrol officer. Contrary to some fans’ expectations of his promotion to detective, he will instead follow in his father’s footsteps by joining the Texas Rangers. Initially resistant to this change and even clashing with his dad over the decision, executive producer and co-showrunner Raisani explained to Entertainment Weekly the reasoning behind putting Carlos on the path to becoming a Ranger.

From the very beginning of season 1, we frequently discussed the idea of guiding Carlos towards becoming an APD detective. However, as his character’s father-son relationship storyline unfolded and we delved into the intricate past of the Texas Rangers, it inadvertently mirrored Carlos’ own experiences with his father: initially viewing him as oppressive and non-accepting, but over time, witnessing a transformation. We believed that Gabriel symbolized the evolution we aspire for within the Texas Rangers, and who embodies this change more fittingly than Carlos.

Initially, it was unexpected to spot Carlos donning a Texas Ranger uniform, given that the series “Lone Star” had been subtly hinting towards him becoming a detective. However, the sudden demise of his father left him shattered and on the verge of losing control as he struggled to identify his father’s killer in the season 4 finale. Wearing the Ranger uniform wasn’t just about solving this mystery but also reconnecting with his father, whose relationship was complex yet improving over the seasons.

Now, Carlos can follow his dad’s legacy, and it’s going to be emotional, as Raisani shared:

As a gamer, I find myself deeply engrossed in a real-life enigma that haunts me – the identity of the person who took away my father. This isn’t your typical detective tale. No, this is a personal journey, a narrative woven with raw emotions.

Though Carlos is joining the Texas Rangers, it doesn’t imply he’s given up on detective work. He might return to it at some point in the future, but as of now, becoming a Ranger seems to be the best choice for him.

Just as any task, it won’t be a walk in the park for Carlos to follow in Gabriel Reyes’ footsteps. He finds himself on an unexpected career trajectory, all while mourning his father. Adding to his challenges, he’s recently married to T.K., and their relationship will undoubtedly face hurdles along the way.

Viewers can look forward to seeing how Carlos’ journey as a Texas Ranger unfolds when the fifth season of 9-1-1: Lone Star resumes on Fox on Monday, September 23 at 8 p.m. ET. Given his past experiences such as being kidnapped and losing his father, it’s tough to say how this season will play out, but perhaps a change in career might bring some positive developments for him, despite any challenges that may arise along the way.
