I Rewatched Fellowship Of The Ring After Loving Rings Of Power, And It Totally Changed My Mind About LOTR's Original Movies

As a die-hard fan who has grown up with Middle-earth, my journey through J.R.R Tolkien’s enchanting realm can be compared to Frodo’s own perilous quest – filled with unexpected twists and revelations that have transformed my perspective on the beloved Lord of the Rings saga.

Initially, when I first viewed the original Lord of the Rings films, they didn’t captivate me. It wasn’t until I delved into its precursor series on Amazon Prime, The Rings of Power, that I began to comprehend the reason behind all the excitement. Now, with Season 2 of The Rings of Power slated for 2024, I decided to revisit Peter Jackson’s movies, hoping to appreciate them more this time. To my delight, it turned out that I had made the right decision!

Initially, I must admit, I wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about “The Lord of the Rings” movies after watching them a few years back. I didn’t grow up with them, I haven’t read the books, and to be frank, the universe was too vast for me to grasp immediately. Fortunately, “The Rings of Power” has been helping me delve into Middle-earth’s history. This newfound knowledge allowed me to reconsider my perspective on “Fellowship”, and as a result, my thoughts about the film have undergone a dramatic change.

Before Watching Rings Of Power, I Wasn’t Invested In The Elves. Now, I Care So Much About Them

In just a moment, I’ll be speaking candidly. The last characters from The Fellowship that genuinely touched me when I first watched it were Elrond, Galadriel, and all the other elves.

In a revealing twist, the characters from The Rings of Power shared which Lord of the Rings character they would emulate if given a ring, and the most frequently chosen option left me astonished.

Initially, I assumed Elrond was merely a guide for Frodo’s group, expecting them to simply set off on their journey. However, revisiting this tale has made me realize my previous ignorance about the lore, particularly concerning Elrond’s significance in Frodo’s quest. It seems I underestimated him more than any other character in the story.

Due to the “Rings of Power”, I now comprehend why he’s always been so cautious about the destructive power these rings possess. In Episode 1 of Season 2, his actions such as leaping off a waterfall with the rings and the subsequent strain on his relationships with Galadriel and High King Gil-galad served to emphasize this point. Consequently, when I rewatched “Fellowship”, I could sense Elrond’s past burdening him as he discussed the urgency of disposing of the ring.

In a different phrase, during my first read of LOTR, Galadriel’s significance wasn’t clear to me, and her cryptic conversations seemed puzzling. But with the knowledge from Rings of Power as background, the poignant scene where she sees the One Ring leaves a profound impact because I understand that she was severely deceived and wounded by Sauron, who once appeared as Halbrand, many years ago.

Through a better understanding of the elves’ role in Middle-earth and their part in the struggle against Sauron, my admiration for them has grown exponentially.

Aragorn’s Lineage And Why It’s Important Is Something I Actually Appreciate

To set the record straight, when I first saw “The Fellowship,” among all the LOTR cast members, Aragorn was one of my top picks, with Gandalf being the other. Viggo Mortensen’s portrayal in the films captivated me, and I was drawn to his heroic journey throughout the trilogy. However, discussing why he had a rightful claim to the throne before “The Rings of Power” series, I would have struggled to provide an adequate explanation.

Without a doubt, let me affirm this wholeheartedly: I am well-acquainted with Isildur! To be precise, during the movie, I let out a yelp when the statues of Isildur and his brother Anárion made their appearance on screen.

In the captivating world of “The Rings of Power,” I find myself deeply drawn to Isildur’s character. His journey away from Númenor has me on the edge of my seat, and I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation as I know he is destined for kingship. I find myself rooting for him, captivated by his pure and noble nature. The intrigue lies in the fact that once he acquires the One Ring, he seems unable to discard it into Mount Doom – a mystery I eagerly await being unraveled.

In watching The Fellowship of the Ring, I truly appreciated the significance of Viggo Mortensen’s character (now also including his backstory from the prequel series) on a much larger, epic level, as it encompasses more than just his skill with a sword or his noble demeanor.

I Fully Get The Power Of The Rings And Just How Terrifying They Are

Initially, I must confess, I found myself quite critical. I assumed that tossing the ring into Mount Doom would be a simple task, and I failed to grasp the magnitude of the situation. Despite knowing that it wouldn’t go unscathed, I underestimated the true horror of it all.

Ah, now it all clicks! The way Sauron deceived Celebrimbor to forge the Rings in The Rings of Power has given a chilling new dimension to Frodo’s journey with the ring. In this prequel series, the One Ring doesn’t exist yet, but we see Sauron setting his evil plot into motion by exploiting this gifted artisan. And let me tell you, as Galadriel found herself aligning with Sauron (who turned out to be Halbrand), not suspecting he was manipulating her, I too was deceived. When his true nature was exposed, it sent a shiver down my spine!

In the series, Sauron is not portrayed as an all-powerful, faceless deity. Instead, he appears as a man whom people worship, which deepens my comprehension of the rings and the eventual ruin of Middle-earth.

Furthermore, observing these powerful characters succumb to his influence despite their seemingly incorruptible nature underscores the malevolent potency of the ring and its capacity for corruption. Consequently, it’s clear that Frodo’s journey won’t be an easy one, which now makes perfect sense.

Reflecting on my initial viewing of “The Fellowship of the Ring,” I was overwhelmed by the depth of the lore, which caused me to appreciate it more superficially. However, having become a fan of “The Rings of Power,” I now have a greater comprehension of the characters, politics, and lore, leading me to completely change my perspective on the original “Lord of the Rings” movies.

To delve deeper into this legendary fantasy series or reevaluate your perspective on it, consider watching “Rings of Power” on Amazon Prime, and for the films, you can subscribe to Max and stream “The Lord of the Rings”.
